Spoiler Vs Suprise

Post by Evangelion Unit 01 » Fri Apr 08, 2005 2:50 pm

I am pretty sure we have all had the experience of having something spoild for us in a ways shapes and sizes. Like for me before I watch Berserk my friends told me what happens in the end. I really did not like that, but I am glad that they where very undetailed about it and that the way the ending happened was still very much of a surprise to me.

Any way, even though I hate spoilers I know some people who hate suprises even more. I know one person who starts a novel by reading the last chapter first and then starting from the beinning just so she is not suprised in the end.

So, what I want to know is why is it that some people choose one over the other. What do you prefer and why?

With novels, I usually start at the beginning (weird, I know), but then after about 50 or 60 pages, if I like the book, I'll look at the end to see what ends up happening. I have as much fun finding out how something happens as I do watching it happen. Anime is different, since I can't just scan a whole page in half a second and get a feel of where it's going to go (although sometimes I do skim through random moments in the late episodes for just that reason, it doesn't work as well as with a novel).

More often than not, I'm just not terribly surprised at most anime endings, or if I am, I'm often surprised in a bad way. Sometimes when a character dies at the end, I feel hurt in a way, and not just because I liked the character, but because it was bad storytelling. They just killed a character off for a cheap grab at last-minute dramatic tension. Sometimes I feel the same way when a character survives, if the series is tragic in general and I've gotten a "vibe" from a character. But don't get me started on "vibes."

If you hate knowing the ending beforehand, can you watch a series twice?
