Having only seen the anime and book one of the manga so far... he makes a decently interesting villain. It could have been worse, considering. He is incredibly cruel to everyone, and that's what we first see, but we also see that he is frail and almost housebound and probably would be helpless and/or dead without Hatori. Whether he realizes that or not. He's a nutbar, absolutely - calling Tohru ugly is not something a sane person would do - but he's an interesting and layered nutbar.
And the story treats him well as a villain. He could have been a cardboard cutout without meaning, but considering the way Furuba pours backstory and sympathy into every other character, it makes sense that the same treatment would be given to him. It's just not the sort of series that paints someone as evil without reason. It aims to make you feel sympathy for everyone, eeeeveryone, even the silly fan club girls.
I have read about THE SPOILER *dun dun dun*, although that was before I saw any of the series. But that really doesn't change my impression - it just plays into his weird situation (ill, caged, unbalanced, and yet having complete power over the others).
So yeah, I like him as a villain. Not as in "OMG I want to be just like him when I grow up and smack small children around for no reason," because no - but he's a decently well constructed character. That's probably the thing a lot of people don't realize, how a character can be cruel and obnoxious and yet interesting or even sympathetic. People have problems with that idea. Happens a lot.

well when you say it that way.....
when I said I felt sorry for him I meant that I felt sorry for him because he's so miserable that he takes it out on the other member of the family
At first I said that I hated Akito mostly because he didn't allow Hatori and Kana to get married but then as I started to understand his situation
that's when I started to actually feel sorry for him

Why would he be one a road, I thought chickens lived in the ocean?

When I had only seen the anime, and hadn't read the manga and didn't know about THE SPOILER, I agreed much with SarahtheBoring. Akito works as a decent villain. He's cruel, vindictive, jealous, petty. . . in the anime, he really has no redeeming factors at all. He's a whiny, spoiled, possessive little brat. After starting the manga, and seeing THE SPOILER, my opinion of Akito began to change. I still see Akito as a great villain, because now there is some motivation, albeit very twisted motivation, for Akito's thoughts and actions. In the anime, I just had to accept that Akito was the way he was, but now that I know more about Akito's background, I understand more why Akito behaves that way. I don't think in any way that the character's backstory justifies Akito's behavior, but it does add a lot more psychological intrigue to the whole plot, and makes Akito seem a little more. . . pathetic. Rather than being a one-dimensional villain who hates everyone, I can see that Akito has had a miserable upbringing, and is worthy of a certain amount of pity. It makes Akito more human, and gives Akito more depth as a villain.

Reading the manga led me to like Akito more. The anime cut the character short so you don't get to see the depth to Akito. The anime left out the most vital info about Akito but that's understandable considering it wasn't gotten to until volume 14.
Overall Akito is most definiatelly a Sohma, and thus can't escape the intial fate that all Sohma's suffer. That being said, Akito isn't really a villian but lonely and misunderstood. If you read up to volume 14 then you know why.
