Help me love anime the way you love anime!!

Post by Misformurmur » Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:14 pm

Hello,
My name is M. and I'm from Phoenix. I'm 25 years old and work in finance.

That aside... I'm not delighted with anime. I want to like it, I really do, but I just can't seem to get into most of the anime I've seen. I mean, there are a couple of anime that I really like, but on the whole I just don't like it so much.

I really want to like it. Am I watching the wrong anime? Could you suggest some anime that I might like?

Here are some of the anime that I do like...
"X" was a pretty good series that I started to watch but didn't get to finish.
"Pet Shop of Horrors" was really cool.
I'm a huge Peter Chung fan but I understand his work isn't considered "anime" by most fans.
I thought "The Animatrix" was great.
I just saw "Tokyo Godfathers" and was very impressed.
I used to watch "Speed Racer" religiously as a kid and "Sailor Moon" when I was in my late teens early twenties.
I also like hentai, but only because I think it's funny. (tenticles *snirk*)

Even in that list I can't think of anything that has really struck me and made me think "OH MY CRAP THAT'S SO COOL" (aside from Peter Chung).

My favorite genres of movies outside of anime are Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror.

I dislike "chibi" anime alltogether (sorry if I didn't spell it right). I prefer a more elongated style. I also love a great villan.

So, now that you know a bit about me, can you make any suggestions as to were I should start to find an anime that I'll just love. Hey, anyone can love anime right?

Thanks for all your great suggestions in advance,
M.

Saiyuki
Le Portrait De Petit Cossette
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Descendants of Darkness (if you don't mind shounen-ai)
Boogiepop Phantom

I would suggest:
Gankoustu
Texhnolyze
RahXephon
Evangelion
Lain
I second Boogiepop Phantom
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo (if you liked "A Kid's Story" and "A Detective's Story" in Animatrix, then you probably will take a liking to Champloo and Bebop, same director).
For something a little less serious, there's GTO. No chibi, but a lot of demented faces. No sci-fi or horror aspects. Just throwing this title out there if you're looking for a change in pace.

Well he hasn't given out his adress (just general dwelling area), phone number, social security number, or real name. So it really isn't bad.

Hentai is basically anime porn. As for tenticles...use your imagination.

If you enjoyed Tokyo Godfathers, I would suggest checking out Satoshi Kon's other work: Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, and Paranoia Agent.

And I'll give Boogiepop Phantom a recommendation as well.

There are many ways to go about watching anime. I think the major key is getting ones that are good but go in order from when anime started to what it is now. Each era has it's own gems making each era stand out. Now one I would suggest is robotech. It has a good plot with vivid characters but you'll have to look past the animation if your into the late 2000's anime. This one was made in teh 80's but still is immensly popular.

Cowboy Bebop is a good starter, as is Iria, and Akira. I mean there's so many to choose from but here's some basics.

I would definitely recommend finishing X, first of all. And if you liked that, you might also like Tokyo Babylon, which is sort of a prequel to X (it has some of the same characters and their backstory- such as Subaru- but it's not a direct prequel story-wise to X). As for other serious anime... hmm, you might like Witch Hunter Robin.

Just as a side note... while I'm sure that you can find an anime you'll really like, why does it sound like you're trying to FORCE yourself to like anime?
