Please recommend something new...

Post by sunandshadow » Wed Sep 07, 2005 12:53 am

Well, I actually managed to use up my to-be-watched stack of anime. So, please recommend something new for me! :) Preferably something new and still being fansubbed, since if it's available for sale in English I've probably looked at it already.

I would prefer to avoid horror, tragedy, gore, cliche foozle quests, and animes where every single character is a moron. I love SMART characters, good science fiction or fantasy world building, school/military stories, romance, comedy, beautiful art, high writing quality, and bishounen.

Here's my list of anime I've already seen (a few OVAs missing, but this is almost everything):

A.D. Police
Ai no Kusabi OVA 1-2
Angel's Egg
Akazukin Chacha (Red Riding Hood Chacha)
Akira
Angel Sanctuary
Arc the Lad
Bakuretsu (Sorcerer) Hunters
Berserk
Beyond the Clouds
Boys Be
Candidate For Goddess OVA
Cowboy Bebop
Detective Academy Q
Dragon Half OVA 1+2
E's Otherwise
Earthian
El Hazard
Fake
Fashionable Judo Girl Yawara
Fruits Basket
Fujimi Orchestra
Fushigi Yuugi TV and 3 OVAs
Ghost In the Shell
Graduation M OVA 1+2
Gravitation
Great Teacher Onizuka
GreenGreen
Gunparade March
Haibane Renmei
Haunted Junction
I My Me Strawberry Eggs
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Kizuna 1-3
Loveless
Perfect Blue
Photon: The Idiot Adventures
Like the Wind, Like the Rain
Mahou Tsukai Tai (Magic User's Club)
Master of Mosquiton
Maze: The Megaburst Space
Mirage of Blaze
Naruto
One Piece
Outlaw Star
Petshop of Horrors
Ping Pong Club
PlanetES
Princess Arete
Psychic Academy
Ranma 1/2
Ryokunohara Labyrinth
Sakigake! Cromartie High
Samurai Champloo
School Rumble
Seikai no Monshu and Seikai no Senkai (Crest and Battleflag of the Stars)
Sensitive Pornograph
Sexy Commando Gaiden Sugoiyo
Shamanic Princess
Shoujo Kakumei (Revolutionary Girl) Utena
Star of Cottonland
Starship Operators
Sukisyo
They Were Eleven
Trigun
Twin Spica
Uninhabited Planet Survive
Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness)
Zetsuai and Zetsuai Bronze

I didn't see Last Exile any where in there. HOwever it was a fairly substantia list so I may have been mistaken. If you haven't seen it on the other hand I would recommend it quite highly to you, especially since you did mention you like fantasy. I would suggest Hellsing, but you did mention no horror, sure it has vampires and ghouls and what not but it isn't really suspense horror. Also be on the look out for Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, Rurouni Kenshin and Scrapped Princess.

Lol. That list divided over the 7 years it took me to watch it is not that much. If there's anything I should quit doing in favor of sunshine it's posting in internet forums like this, I spent way more tome doing that then watching anime.

Just noticed you haven't watched Rurouni Kenshin. You really need to get some new anime dude! If your gonna do anything with manga, the first one you must pick up is Love Hina. I've gotten so many people into that manga I lost count. Shoot, half of my books aren't here cause some people are still borrowing them. My recommendation is high for those two, just look at my user name.

Rurouni - from Rurouni Kenshin, my used to be favorite anime.
Keitaro - Main character in Love Hina, my favorite manga.

Great Teacher Onizuka is currrently my favorite anime, but you saw that already.

Even though it falls under two of the "avoid" categories (Horror, KIND OF, and tragedy) I *HIGHLY* recommend Lunar Legend Tsukihime. It also fits well under school/romance.

Betterman, also. Nice comedy/sci fi/romance/drama/horror mix. You said you'd LIKE to avoid them, but you said nothing about not recommending them.

With these elements in mind, while I realize this could head in either direction to recommend (cause this series gets pretty grim) I'm gonna suggest 'Now and Then, Here and There'

Depressing stuff, yes...but still worth the viewing.

I have a bookcase full of manga. My favorites at the moment are W Juliet, Tramps Like Us, and any yaoi I can get my hands on.
