Why do YOU, watch anime?
I just wanted to get to know what draws everyoen else to japanese anime.
I watch some of it simply on the basis that therer realy isn't anything good on television or in the theaters right now. I also watch it because I have a soft spot for inner meaning, stories with a moral or message, the kind where you walk away with something. This doesn't mean that I don't watch movies or TV at all. I record Law and Order, and I still watch Empire of the Sun and Lorenzo's Oil. And by the same token I don't watch all anime. My favorite animes are Grave of the Fireflies, Metropolis, the Escaflowne movie, and Spriggan, but there are other animes that I won't touch with a ten foot pole. (Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, DBZ, Hamtaro.)

So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Don't mind me, I'm just tired, so I'm going to copy one of my better responses.

Damn it, this is hard to put into word! Well, here it goes...
To me, it's a way for my imagination to go crazy. Anime is a concept without (ok, little) boundries. It makes me feel free. There is so much to it, that, I will never understand it all. And what's great, is that it's normally not tied down to rules where certain things are allowed and not allowed (until it's dubbed and brought to the rest of the world).
Also, that it's so diverse. There is no age limit or restriction. You can almost do anything!
All in all, when I watch anime (depends on which one) I feel more at ease than watching anything else. I've found that my liking of other shows has dropped dramatically since I've been hooked on anime. But that's no big deal.

I wonder this myself sometimes, since I don't especially like Sci-Fi stuff outside of the anime genre (not that all anime is sci-fi. re: love hina, princess nine, etc). I think it's because I perfer the Japanese style of story-telling. Most of my top ten movie choices are Japanese: Seance, Seven Samarui, Afterlife, Hana-Bi, Happiness of the Katakuris, etc.
There's just a patience and whimsey to those movies I can't find in american films for the most part. An anime series that comes to mind in the style of storytelling I enjoy is Niea_7.
Also, in most anime series, every character is well represented. Take Battle Athletes, for instance. Even the villans are made to be well-rounded. Dilandu in Escaflowne comes first to mind.
And then there's the entire Studio Ghibli library, which is a whole genre unto itself....
Of course, there are american movies that work for me as well. Slingblade, Jackie Brown and Annie Hall are in my top ten as well. Along with Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast so the French don't feel mis-represented.
Sorry for the confusing, rambling e-mail.

Haha, Happiness of the Katakuris?
Heh, Miike is a f'd up guy. Hazard City looks intriguing though.
Personally Seven Samurai is so cliche. I respect it for being a pioneer film, but besides that, it's not really an interesting piece.
Kikujiro no Natsu is my fav. movie of all time. And that is saying a lot actually.
