Saiyuki.....

I have heard somethings about Hakkai that I really need cleared up... ..I have come to realize that Saiyuki has some "sketchy" character backgrounds (i.e. Gojyo's half-brother slept with his mother). So here is my question, is Hakkai very very close to his sister? Or is he romantically attracted to her or what is the deal???

I don't think Gojyo's brother had a relationship like that with his mother. Where did you hear that?

Anyway, in the manga, Hakkai has an intimate relationship with his sister. In the anime, she wasn't related to him - at least, it wasn't specified.

In the manga, Hakkai knowingly has an incestuous relationship with his sister, Kanan. In the anime, this situation isn't even hinted at. While I can understand why they did this in the anime (it's not a family show, but it's not HBO, either, and incest is a lot to swallow, particularly since we're supposed to sympathize with the couple), Hakkai's status as a sinner does take a turn for the worse if you throw incest into the pot with mass murder. Trust me, his character is a lot darker in the manga than it is in the anime.

Regarding Goyjo's mother and his brother, Jien, having something more than a parent/child relationship, other than that found in the delusions of fanfic authors and doujinshi artists, there is absolutely no evidence anything "weird" was going on between them. Someone who wasn't paying attention to the anime could, theoretically, confuse Jien with Goyjo's father and come up with some kind of sexual relationship with Goyjo's stepmother THAT way...but this is stretching things (or you're watching a really bad fansub). ^_^

Let's not get into all the other "questionable" relationships that inquiring minds can dredge up about Saiyuki. Oy.

You might want to check your assumptions. IIRC Gojyo mentions hearing them after Jien calms her down, and I think Nii made mention of it too. Now I'll have to skim through all my manga. -_-

And if you're saying that the series wouldn't do something as depraved as that, I kind of doubt it. In a series with Hakkai and his sister presented as a "romantic" (albeit dark) story, and Nii's presence, like, at all (threatening to rape Yaone comes to mind)... it's pretty clear the series won't flinch from some pretty fucked-up stuff.

They weren't assumptions, but yes, I forgot about that part. Have to go back to my manga and see exactly what it looks like...God that's...disturbing. I must have blocked it from my memory.

OK! I was wrong, Jien is definately up to something with mom IN THE MANGA.

Wait a minute. Is Jien the true son of Goyjo's stepmother? Couldn't he be another stepchild? We alread know Goyjo's father has slept with another woman, it's not impossible that he's got other children (full demons) running around. I think I like Mom seducing her stepson better than Mom seducing her son. After all, I can't believe Jien would go for something like that, given how upright and moral he's portrayed elsewhere. (Man, I'm really reaching...) Whatever the case, Mom deserves what she gets.

*sigh* So the consensus seems to be that, in the anime, there's no hanky panky going on between Jien and good ole Mom.
