Worst Dubbed Animes!

Post by AMV_4000 » Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:37 pm

ok, i usually dont post in here, but.... I have recently seen one of my favorite animes butchered by HORRIBLE dubbing... Terrible puns, and jokes that make sinbad and mr. pilkington look like highly respected commedians...

Bo-bobo... when in japaneese i found it funny, it was interesting and kept me entertained... I have recently seen it on CTN, i wanted to cry and throw up... the horrible puns and jokes made me sick to my stomache.. the crappy VA was well... total crap.. they made everything so childish and stupid that it makes me sad... I had my heart set on buying all of the dvds when they came out, but i may rethink that... (or just deleted the english audio track on the dvds)

So i ask you... What do you think is the worst dubbed anime of all time?

I can think of a LOT of answers I'd love to use here (Aura Battler Dunbine, Macross II, numerous older dubs, actually)

But, for true crap, I'd say it's a tie between:

-Warriors of the Wind (the 'dub' so bad, it's the reason Miyazaki made Disney agree to a 'No cuts' policy. For those that don't know the story, Streamline initially attempted to release Nausicaa here back in their heyday...however, feeling it wouldn't sell well as it was (female protagonist and whatnot) they basically went and respliced it with two other titles to craft what...well...I'm not sure there's a word for it. I've yet to find a copy myself, but all reports I've heard from those who've seen it say it's prob. best left forgotten)

and

-Tranzor Z (If you kind of squint, it's Mazinger Z...only with the character's names changed... ...and 2/3s of the episodes removed... ...and all but two references to Japan removed...)

Well, you got to consider that Bo-bobo has LOADS of Japanese references to a point that no average American viewer (or rather an average anime viewer) will get, and that the jokes WILL horrifically fall flat if they translate them faithfully (not to mention all those Japanese text that's floating around of which I bet contains lots Japanese puns that'll get lost in translation).

God I hope the next few posts doesn't contain a bunch of noobish posts with horrific grammar. :?

Wait, so it's an anime about someone who fights with his nose hair, and you're saying the English translation is childish?
I think it more or less served its purpose, ie. I was with a few non-anime-watching friends at a diner when Bobobobo Bobobo came on, and they couldn't continue eating between laughing and saying "wtf" (you know, the real-life equivalent). No dub is perfect (or good, imo) but Bobobo's could've been much much worse from the one episode I saw.

To be more ontopic, Love Hina. I never knew who Wendee Lee was but after hearing less than a full second of Keitaro, less than a second of Naru, and about 1.5 seconds of Kaolla, I decided I knew enough to stay away from anything she's touched (aside from, absurdly enough, Cowboy Bebop).

But now I'm getting déjà vu from the last time this topic came up. I'm going to have a browse and see if I can find the old one.

Risky Safety's dub was quite hard on the ears. The voice for Satefy was not unlike what one sounds like after inhaling a nearly-lethal dose of Helium.

pseudo-edit: it was here, and it was fourteen pages in and locked so obviously the "zomg dup thread" thing doesn't apply. But if you want some extra responses I guess you can read through the old one.

As far as Japanese style jokes go, sometimes, you don't have a choice.

I watched the dub for Those Who Hunt Elves and the sub for the same series.

Thankfully, I'm VERY glad the dub for it is that good. The jokes MAKE SENSE to an English speaker... [that and the VA's were awesome to begin with, go ADV...]

But for worst dub, in spite of Japanese context, Love Hina is down and out the worst of the worst...

There were no Japanese 'culture' clues to mistranslate and the acting was just BAH*...

I personally love dubs and will forgive most things, my friend did too, but once he heard the dub for one of his fav anime, he stopped after the first dvd...

Quite sad really...
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

You may have seen my choise, in the old thead, Garzey's Wing, the worst dub ever for the worst anime ever.

Another terrible dub I have just watched Gunparade March.

They did a very bad job in Crest of Stars and Banner of Stars also.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

Come and join us on the tiny but fun forum at http://www.allanime.org

I can't stand the Excel Saga dub.. I think the emotion and voice acting isn't well with the english Love Hina..

I thought Narutos dub was OK but now I'm getting sick of it.. Mainly because of the Dub job with Naruto. The Japanese VA for Naruto is very good at is very good at sounding immature and then turning serious when needed... Knows how to make him sound very care free, and then at the drop of a hat turn into serious mode. That isn't the case with the english voice actor for Naruto.. When he gets serious he sounds almost the same.. and if it was like that with the original version of Naruto.. I probably would of never got into it.
