American definition of Otaku is generally a hardcore anime fan. Someone who's got their walls covered with posters, has a bookcase full of anime DVDs or VHS, an army of figures, (description of my room) i.e: total geek. It's the whole anime subculture, but to put it on an individual, that person would be really into anime, not just dabble.

Japanese Otaku is a hardcore fan of anything. And the term Otaku isn't a good thing. A reporter in the late seventies coined the term and its been used ever since (I got this infor from the pampphlet that came with Otaku No Video).

So American Otaku, are anime geeks who take pride in their geekery.
Japanese Otaku are hardcore fans of anything and the term is a derogotory one.

i beleive the japanese meaning is more on the lines of an extreme fan of <insert fandom here> to the point where they don't leave their house and have no life. It's ment to be an insult.

however, becuase of anime being so popular outside of japan, westerners have made this term a little less severe (also a lack of real understanding of japanese culture). It still indicates that someone is a huge fan of anime or manga to the point where the collect a lot of various merchendise. people tend to use it a lot to discribe themselves not knowing it's true origins. silly people :P

If you want to know what an otaku is, get and watch the Japanese TV show "Densha Otoko"

A reason for the japanese looking down upon the term started somewhere back in the early 90's where a serial killer raped and killed 8 little girls. When investigators went to the mans house they were astonished to see hentai posters, figures, as well as over 200 hentai movies on his computer. Once this had reached the public, those who were so called Otaku were looked down upon and the term changed drastically for the worse. So if you happen to go to Japan I would watch out for using the word Otaku, while I wear the word Otaku proudly my firends from Japan most certainly do not.

I saw it in that CNN article on anime piracy and it said that it meant 'your household'. Looking it up in an English-Japanese online dictionary is resulting in the same thing. Although the page I'm looking at says otaku means 'your home/house' or a 'geek, nerd, enthusiast'.

Otaku are just people who really like anime. Whether they decide to call themselves that is up to them.
