Basic Anime Questions
I know this might be a little odd, but I have two questions (me being an anime noob who wants to broaden his horizons).
1. Are there any animes that aren't mind-warping, but tell a good story? Minimum romance and angst preferred. Also, where would one find one of these?
2. Are there any sci-fi animes out that aren't epic sagas like Crest of the Stars? Things with realistic scenarios and near-future stuff?
3. Any recommendations for things to look for?
Thanks.

Well lets see.
One that aren't mind warping? Minimum angst and Romance preffered. Your making it awfully hard now. I mean there are many great sci-fi type animes but they involve relationships and such.
I would say ghost in the shell but it even has some parts that send you for a loop. Your going to find that most have the things you don't want. Cowboy bebop is pretty decent although some episodes have a good amount of angst.
I would Say Ghost in the shell or Cowboy Bebop for a futuristic but not way out there alien type thing.
As for any other animes...
Samurai Champloo has some disconnected characters. There are some moments in various episodes that seem angsty and some romance filled. Most are just funny and entertaining.
So my three recommondations would be
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Blood: the Last Vampire is a good movies that doesn't get romancy and angsty. Just a lot of killing. o_o

The most "realistic" sci-fi series I can think of that will do you justice is Planetes.burrofootball40 wrote:

Well, as a general rule, telling a good story tends to go hand in hand with a bit of mind-warping in any medium.burrofootball40 wrote:1. Are there any animes that aren't mind-warping, but tell a good story? Minimum romance and angst preferred. Also, where would one find one of these?
Nothing wrong with epic sagas. Rather, there's everything right with them. Try watching Crest and then Banners I-III. In order, preferably.burrofootball40 wrote:2. Are there any sci-fi animes out that aren't epic sagas like Crest of the Stars? Things with realistic scenarios and near-future stuff?
Anyway, there's Ghost in the Shell, but that's on the mind-warping side due to its Gibsonian nature. There's also Appleseed and Armitage, in a similar vein. For something in between, try Bubblegum Crisis 2040.
Well, I just mentioned a few. Also try Scrapped Princess and Witch Hunter Robin.burrofootball40 wrote:3. Any recommendations for things to look for?

I suggest Kino's Journey.
Also, try reading Yotsuba&!

I found some Robotech DVDs in my stocking, my dad apparently liked them when he was my age (1986-8). Anyway, he gave me Robotech 1-12 and something from what looks like the continuation. I watched a few, not really seeing how we'd pick a name like "Robotech" for our Earth military, but I like the Tomcat-inspired fighter. Bit silly on the mecha, tanks are better in strict combat terms (smaller target, better recoil-absorbtion, less moving parts), but I like it. It's about the story I was looking for.

Maybe you would like Wolf's Rain. It's scifi-ish and though it contains a little bit of both romance and angst, its not completely made up of either. I suppose the only drawback by your criteria is that it is a tad bit...philosophical. Which could warp your mind if you're not used to thinking about things like that. You're a bit hard to please aren't you?

Try Wings of Honnemaise It is scifi with a little romance and not hard to understand.
Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky are very good to.
Blue Submarine 6 a good short scifi series.
Armitage there are several of these and are pretty good scifi. I like Armitage III.
Dai Guard a longer series that is scifi giant robot humor. It's a kind of parody of Evangelion with a not very "state of the art" robot, pilots who are just pr people from a security firm, and the firm is more concerned with how much it costs than saving the world.

Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
