I'm fond of Mononoke, though it isn't my favorite Ghibli title...
I think it is a fantastic title and the only place I would disagree with you is on the dub. I think the dub is mixed... Some of the voices are GREAT and some are not... the worst voice is San herself...
the dub of Spirited Away is SO much better...
Just shows what a talented voice director can do with talent vs. a poor voice director can do with talent. The guy who directed Mononoke has done MANY poor dubs before that one... but because he had so many titles under his belt... that's how he got the job with Disney...
Disney realized their mistake when they had to go back and redub over half an hour of recorded dialogue (which is days worth of work)
Anyway...
I am very glad Disney did actually release a bi-lingual DVD (since they originally wanted to release an English only DVD)
I do want to say that as far as anime goes, there are MANY worse titles you could select as your all time favorite...
so THUMBS UP to you!!
And if you haven't seen Brad DeMoss' AMV "Rythm of the Heat", I urge you do so!

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.

I thought Claire Danes did a great job doing her voice...all the emotion was captured very wellSome of the voices are GREAT and some are not... the worst voice is San herself...
Well I think Ive said this a thousand times but oh well....I dont care for subs..I only watch them when they are not licensed and once they Are I never watch them again.the only place I would disagree with you is on the dub. I think the dub is mixed

OMG, Princess Mononoke if f?#*ing great!
I loved the characters, the plot, the animation, and also the dub.
The issue with mankind killing the forest / nature and them striking back can be applied to our world 1:1 really. And Ashi Taka rocked evertime he got his Bow and stone arrows!
Besides, anyone out there knows if the movie was fully hand-drawn of if there was CGI involved, because sometimes in the movie it's really hard to tell...
Also I was really glad of the dub. Gillian Anderson did good as Mara (hope I remember the name of the wolf god right) and Claire Danes did a great job as San. I think this is one of the best dubs out there, if you look (hear) at Now and Then, Here and There, the dub is miles ahead!
The one thing that I have to admit, there could have been more Special features, not just the trailers. Like the Escaflowne movie, the menus are pretty animated, and there is an extra Audio channel with the Dolby 5.1 score. That sure would have rocked for Mononoke, because I think the soundtrack is one of the best & most epic I have ever heard.
On the cover of the DVD it says "The Star Wars of Animated Features". That is true, although I would have written "The Lord of the Rings of Animated Features". Would work out better, if it was just for the soundtrack. They are both epic in the same ways...

I love how people new to the world of Japanese animation instantly jump on the Mononoke Hime bandwagon and carry a banner around declaring its superiority, yet they have never seen the true classics that established Miyzaki and Ghibli as the pinacle of works that can cross age and cultures like Nausica and Laputa.

I think you can be a little forgiving since it is not an easy thing to see the Ghibli catalog here in the US without either spending quite a bit of money (tho well worth it) or stiffing the Ghibli folks and buying a bootleg.Tsuji Mania wrote:I love how people new to the world of Japanese animation instantly jump on the Mononoke Hime bandwagon and carry a banner around declaring its superiority, yet they have never seen the true classics that established Miyzaki and Ghibli as the pinacle of works that can cross age and cultures like Nausica and Laputa.
