Anime's with a focus on war

Are there many animes that focus on the reality of modern warfare, instead of mercanery operations or otherwise completely unrealistic elements like FMP?

Yeah, ive been wondering that too. Would be nice to see some really cool realistic anime dogfights. Like a... Does it exist a Vietnam anime?

Grave of the Fireflies, part of FMA, and one episode of Wolf's Rain are all I can think of off the top of my head.

I've never watched it, but Yugo the Negotiator might be a series to try. I don't think there is a great deal of actual warfare, but it is more realistic than many other shows.

Gasaraki has several war scenes, that aside from the mechs, are handled fairly realistically.

As most war sories aren't really about the actual combat perse, you'll find a large mix of stuff (mostly futuristic) that deals with the story. "Modern warfare" is dificult to find. WW2 era stuff like in FMA and grave of the Fireflies is, of course not the wold of today, but is often closer than the futuristic.

To contribute: Asside from the title character, most of the weaponry in Saikano is modern.

Kino's Journey had some battle scenes but I think they were futuristic.

Zipang is set in the WWII era, I believe it is about a modern day warship that somehow gets sent back to WWII (battle of Midway?).

Just thought of another anime that does feature an episode set in Vietnam in the present day, but has backflashes to the Vietnam war. Gallery Fake episode 13 focuses on the search for a photojournalist who disappeared during the war.

Hmm, browsing info on Zipang, I also found more about Silent Service. There's two titles I want to check out now, hmm.
