how to get someone addicted to anime

Post by burntresistor » Thu Jul 13, 2006 12:24 am

I myself am 22 and my only sister is 10 years younger than me, which leaves not much in common. She really likes amv's and watching me make them and I still can't get her into a series. I guess, i just want to bond with her since we don't really do anything at all together.

I've tried: electric guitar she got bored with in a month, video games she won't touch a M rated game, but we did play splinter cell for awhile and last but not least Photoshop CS2 she likes photography and it has to do with computer which is my major but getting her to learn is rocky cause the books on it are pretty dry. I hope this is not a pointless thread.

It may or may not be. My opinion only counts for one vote.

I'm in almost the same boat. I'm 25, my little bro is 9 years younger (15 going on 16 for those who can't count) and is the only one that lives at home, aside from me who just moved back. He's a jock type and makes fun of me and my b/f because we like anime and amvs. Then he saw Kill Bill and the anime sequence and was suddenly begging me and my b/f for all our anime involving swords. We laughed. But I handed him the 1st season of Inuyasha b/c it was the 1st thing I had on hand, and he seems to like it so far.

Pointless? No, sir. Although be prepared for incestuous loli jokes with this crew.

I'm an only child, but I find it awesome that you're involving your sister in your hobbies. Teaching her how to edit photos, as well as video, will put her way ahead of her peers.

But yeah, books can be pretty dry. I once had a Final Cut Pro guidebook I bought... I ended up selling it Half Priced Books because it was way too dry for me to try to experiment with.

Good luck!

Who would ever support such horrible things? Oh... well... hmm...

It's great that you want to get your younger sibling into something you do, but it's ultimately going to be up to her to choose what she likes. Be a conduit for information, but don't pressure her into it. If she likes it, she'll come back for more.

Let's try to see someone misconstrue that! ... shit.

What kind of shows have you tried to show her so far? From what you said about video games, she's probably disinterested in the darker and more violent series.

Also, what kind of girl is she? What are her interests? What kind of shows does she watch in the non-anime department? If you take everything you know about your little sister and really think about it, you can probably come up with a profile of the sort of show she'd like.

I envy you by the way. I've always wanted a little sister. (People, don't take that the wrong way!)

Yeah, I kind of figured the darker anime series were out. (I don't want to be strangled by my dad jk lol)There a little over protective. What I had in mind was more like witch hunter robin, which I know she likes. She watched some of it and was thinking more like read or die or even escaflowne TV series.

I am guessing here, but the reason she won't watch regularly is because she thinks her friends would tease her.

Pfft tell her not to care what they think. Everyone has their different likes and dislikes. Not to mention I've changed many a friends views on anime and now I have some who like it almost as much as I do.

Witch Hunter Robin is a great series, although I'm pretty surprised a young girl would like it since it's a little dry. Some of the later episodes are fairly dark, but not too bad.

When you say Read or Die, are you talking about the OVA series or the TV series? While both are excellent and neither IMO has excess violence, one episode of R.O.D. the TV does have nudity. Episide 9, Heart of Darkness. It's not really sexual in nature since the woman's just bathing in the hot spring but depending on your family's values it might not be appropriate.

Both Read or Die series are excellent by the way.

Escaflowne's got a bit of a body count to it according to my older sister who watched it. I haven't seen it though so I can't say much on it.

And Older Gohan is right. Tell your sister not to let other people decide what she should and should not like. Encourage her to be her own person, to think for herself and to not be afraid to be different. If her friends can't accept her as an indivdual, they aren't friends at all.

i agree with you. I agree because some of my friends are like that. they dislike anything about anime. and they dont even know what it is. they just dont like anything they cant get into....they are jerks. :x moving on.....getting your sister involved in anime is a good idea. just like basharoftheages said, give her time and if she likes it, she will come back

I'm in the exact same situation. My brother just turned 12. I showed him about two or three anime that he didn't like. Then one day, he asked if I had any good movies for him to watch. The end result is he watched all twelve episodes of Onegai Teacher in one day and now he is one of us u_u

I would but I feel sorry for you.
