Does anyone know of some really great anime that few people know about, or just a couple of titles that often go overlooked or unappreciated? I'm looking into getting some new anime, so I'd like some suggestions. However! Please do not just list titles alone; please give a short description of what the anime is about, and why you like it.

Thanks in advance,
You're lucky... I've decided to let you live to see the day when I will rule the world.

One I would recommend is Kino's Journey (or Travels, depending) which is a very cerebral series with beautiful art and a complicated story. I really enjoyed it, and there's only 13 episodes so you can get through it fairly quickly.

Another really beautiful one is Mushishi, which is about a man named Ginko who collects "Mushi" or strange supernatural creatures and how they interract with humans. AniDB probably has a better description of it here but I can't recommend it enough.

If you want gore, ninjas, a deep plot, cool animation, then Basilisk is the anime for you.
IF you liked Hellsing and wondered what it would be like if alucard butt fucked vash and had a kid, Trinity blood!
Mezzo is a good all around series, lost of action, emotion, 12 year old panty shots and lots of other good stuff.
NEGIMA! More people need to see negima, the manga was amazing and the anime it's bad either, c'mon people, it's from the guy who did love hina!
I know of tons more, but that should keep u busy for a while. Check them out, read some reviews and what not and who knows, maybe u'll grow to love them too. (or maybe u already have all those? 0-0;)

Outlaw Star was pretty under-appreciated. I personally also like Galaxy Angel a lot, doesn't differ much between the four seasons.

Texhnolyze is weird anime about robotic limbs, gang warfare and random scenes of freakishness.

Najica: Blitz Tactics - Fan Service! Oh, the story is pretty good too.

Petshop of Horrors - Some very strange morality plays, I think six stories centered around a very wierd pet shop.

Early Reins - An entertaining little western, a runaway train, bad guys, cute girls who take charge, a cute, miniskirted, quick draw, sheriff candidate, even a gattling gun.

Dai Guard: Office workers must save the world. When the Hetrodynes return after twelve years absence, people from the PR office of 21st Century Security Corp. must save the world using a "not quite state of the art" giant robot, that the military had abandoned, and they have been using for advertizing stunts.

Malice@Doll - Extremely strange CGI anime. I made an amv for a wtf contest with this one. Very interesting in some ways.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

I second Kino's Journey! It's a great show. It makes you think and it looks at societies, traditions, morals, and all kinds of things. It's just interesting.

I also suggest Glass Mask. Not the 1980's version, but the 2000 one. It's a wonderful drama about a girl with a natural talent for acting and how is she gets in the acting world. I love this show because the main character TRULY have passion from acting. She loves plays on stage and drama on tv. She even risked her own life to get tickets to watch a play. All she has is acting and I loved every min of this series. It's over 50 episodes.

You want unheard of underappreciated anime?

Chew on these f00ls!!

Boys Be - nobody, and I mean NOBODY makes amvs to these and nobody I know knows wtf I'm talking about...

Louie the Rune Soldier - awesome dub btw, great OP too.

Shadow Skill - Megumi Hayashibara kicking ass while being super muscular and still remain sexy? Yep...

unheard of you say? how's this?

Virtua Fighter TV - SEXCELLENT eng. dub and the ONLY game turned anime that does it in a fun way, low budget, and STILL pull off something more watchable than anything short of Fatal Fury Movies... [as far as budget goes, FF is king of game turned anime] Need more game ports where they don't take themselves too seriously...

Angel Links - the bastard child of Outlaw Star, I liked the b00bs and yeah, the heroes [heroines? bah] were overpowered but its music rocked me ears in a good way and hey, I wanted to hump Mei Fon, shoot me...
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

I'd have to say "Monster." I've watched up to episode 43 already(there are74) and from what I can tell just as the story seems to slow or lose direction, something menacing always happens which brings it back right on track. I think it's more of a psychological/mystery/drama kind of anime :P
