The Cultural Reach of Anime (The Movies)
I hope most are aware that The Matrix was largely influenced by two things John Woo movies and Anime.
I thought it would be nice to see if anyone knows exactly which anime. I remember when Anime made you a nerd. Now it reaches celebrity status and everybody likes at least one anime.
Ghost in the Shell coming a few years before the Matrix is a given.
Armitage is another.
I heard Fist of the North Star.
I can't find a list anywhere, but heck it could be interesting to see what people know.
So anyone know of still more?

haha, I haven't read that stuff in ages.Kalium wrote:The Matrix was pretty straight Gibsonian SF with some religious factors mixed in for spice. Ghost in the Shell was even stronger, being closer in time and concept to Neuromancer (Wintermute and the AI, anyone?).
You might want to take a look at the special features of the animatrix disk. They discuss in detail (with lots of self booting of egos) this topic.
I'm thinking that Johny Mnemonic was probably a pretty big influence as well. Sort of like the matrix .01 beta, with no budget.
The spice must flow...

Oh Yeah. I forgot about Lain.
Most certainly an influence with the whole kid jumping of the roof with a low concept of reality.
Johnny too. (Of course I heard the original Johnny the creators wanted was Depp, but I can't picture it without Reeves. He fits those cyperpunk deals.) Depp would not be such a bad replacement.
The studio wanted Brad Pitt or Leonardo. (Will Smith turned it down for Wild Wild West. Wonder if that is why he did I, Robot...."Cause Damn."[MIB])
Funny enough I never bought the Animatrix. Always meant to buy the box set and forgot.
