Angsty, teen romance suggestions!

Post by CrackTheSky » Mon Oct 16, 2006 1:35 am

What can I say? I'm a sucker for cliche teen love stories, and I'm wondering what are some of the better series/movies/OVAs out there with this kind of focus? Heck, it doesn't even have to be the focus, as long as it's there somewhere, that's what I'm looking for.

Within the next few days I'll have polished off RahXephon and Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, and in a few weeks I'll have gotten enough money to buy Voices of a Distant Star, so I'm looking for some more of those high school teen love stories to satiate me.

Any suggestions? I don't care how sad, silly, ridiculous or cliche the story is; in fact I'd prefer some of the more depressing/emotional anime, but I'm very new to anime as a whole, so I want to see it all anyway. Just tell me what you think are some of the best out there!

Thanks!

His and her circumstances. Seriously, it doesn't get much better than neurotic high school girls.

Peach Girl which has Sae who what I considered the most bitchy girl ever conceived in anime. The drama here is so over the top it sickens me.

And the characters are not really teens, but Kimi ga Nozomu Eien should do considerable justice, and it's a fan-favorite for romantic dramas. FUNimation will release that around December so you can check it out.

I'm planning on getting Kare Kano soon, and I'm gonna check out Peach Girl too. Keep 'em coming.

Eureka Seven. Romance outshines even the sci-fi and mecha aspects of the show here. Not entirely sure how cliche it is, but it's damn good.

Saikano (She, the Ultimate Weapon)

Seriously. For angst, that series can't be beat, and it's a pretty good teen romance to boot. If you don't like the anime, I would definitely suggest that you try the manga. I thought that the books were absolutely beautiful and made up for the parts where the anime lacked - particularly in the sense that the manga added much more comedy to offset the extreme angst.

Both the anime (thirteen episodes) and the manga (seven volumes) are out in the US, so they shouldn't be tough to find.

Hope that trips your trigger. ^_^

If you're getting Voices of a Distant Star, get The Place Promised in Our Early Days. You can get both together in a pack from ADV. Both are very good stories.
Miyazaki's Whisper of the Heart is a sweet teen love story, quite a bit of angst on her part.
Jin Rho: is another very angsty love story. Love how they use the story of little red ridinghood in that one. Great ending.
Sakura Diaries: if you want something a bit humorous. Poor Touma, his cousin is in love with him and trying to get him into her bed, at the same time he has told a very hot chick a lie to get her to go out with him and he is losing control of it.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
