What's in a name? Need opinions.

Post by electiveinsanity » Mon Feb 12, 2007 10:05 am

I think it's okay for me to post this here... If not, sorry.

I'd like to get your opinions on a name for a manga! As a project for my IMED class, I'm starting an online manga/novel. Hopefully, I'll have the time to make some trailers for it (using origional art and 3d models). I'm hoping that it will be kind of like eva-r.com, only with my own story instead of fan fiction.

First, a summary:
In a really, really tiny nutshell, it will be a mecha-based story, kind of like Gasaraki. There will be several sublots, but the main theme of the story will be about a small group of test pilots in a weapons development program. A corporation has developed a new weapon (some kind of mech) and a pilot enhancement system that improves the pilots' natural abilities by controlling some of their brain functions through sound. The system turns out to be very effective but also has serious physical and pyschological side effects. The bad guys in a story will also have mechs, but will use sound in a different way.

The running theme here is "audio used as a weapon." The pilots call signs will be echo1, echo2, echo3, ect. The title I have in mind is
Echo Effeckt or Echo Effect.

What do you think? Does the name suck? Is using "echo" for callsigns too cheesy? If so, could you suggest something better?

Thanks for your input!

Something like Echo might work for Japan, since its a foreign language for them, but if your appealing to a primarily english crowd, I would suggest calling upon mythos, a noun from a historical event in which you might parallel to rape for ideas when you get stuck, such as Bikini Atoll, Atol? whatever, being the bases for Bikini bottom of SpongeBob. Or else do what many others do, bastardize some latin/greek/foreign language.

Concerning 'misspelings' like Ekho or Effekt might work, but generally the only place I see that is either in some bizarre experimental work, a concept album, a foreigner who probably just can't translate or got the wrong guy to do it, or else a work which is, in general, of lower quality. Of course, these are mere stereotypes, but these are my impressions.

No, I have not given any specific suggestions, just a few thoughts on where to look. Narcissus comes to mind, but seems to me there was another myth based on echos.

Good luck.
