I read the manga (still am, it's still being made) before I checked out the anime. I love the manga, it's awesome. It's very dark, "edge of your seat," and full of many "holy shit" moments strung together.
I agree though, the anime blows in comparison. In the anime, there are serious holes and missing details in the plot. The animation quality is bad and they cut too many corners with it. Also, the characters just seemed too stupid and frozen with fear half the time. I mean, scared is one thing, but total incapacitation is another. I stopped watching after seeing an episode, but from what I heard the ending is pretty half-assed as well.
In short, if you liked the anime, go for the manga, because it puts the anime to shame. If you hated the anime, but thought the premise had potential, give the manga a shot. If you haven't read or watched it, I recommend the manga over the anime.
