Help: Recommendation for a Desperate Couple

Post by inuhikarifan » Fri Jul 27, 2007 2:42 am

My boyfriend are getting desperate in looking for a new anime to watch. We've tried out quite a few of the new ones lately and have been GREATLY disappointed. We are looking for something dramatic, with lots of emotion. Romance is good, but not necessary. Nothing slapstick or overly perverted please. Any genre is okay... but he doesn't want anything ridiculously cute with no backbone like... *thinks* Bottle Fairy or Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar.

To give you an idea of what we like...

His favs: Gundam anything and Naruto
He hates: Ouran High Host Club

My favs: PRINCESS TUTU!, Wolf's Rain, Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, Loveless
I hate: Excel Saga, Trigun

Any recommendations will be researched and checked out... PLEASE HELP!!!

I would HIGHLY suggest the following for you, since you seem to like more artistic anime.

Kino's Journey: Into artistic expression of humanity's many flaws, involves only two main characters, and many side characters. Main charater is Kino, a young woman who travels the world on her motorbike Hermes, which is the second character, and it talks. It's not cartoony, and it ROCKS!

Fruits Basket: A little more romancy, involves a cursed family that turns into animals of the Chinese Zodiac when hugged by the oppositte gender. The story revolves around a young girl named Tohru Honda that is orphaned, and lives with said family.

Chrno Crusade: A little more religious anime, that is kind of violent, kind of romance, and kind of bad ending.

For Him:

Neon Geneis Evagelion: A kind of mecha anime similar to Gundam, except in basically everything. It's more of a psychologial thriller that involves several religious themes, and a emo pilot of the mecha. It's good in several aspects, and lacks in several as well.

Getbackers: A neat anime that invovles around a recovery service that can "get anything lost returned", and has several different "fighters" that are experienced in different styles of fighting arts.

Outlaw Star: Kind of old, but it's still an awesome futuristic anime that involves space pirates, a mysterious ship, and memorable characters.

Of course, you can Wikipedia any of those for more detailed plots, as I'm not included to post an entire plot of each anime.

Just my two cents, no flaming towards my descriptions plz.

I recommend Kino's Journey, because it's the single most thought-provoking anime I've ever seen.

If you have time for 50 episodes, I'd hesitantly suggest Eureka 7, though you may want to read up on that before you start watching it, as it's a pretty big time investment. I found it well worth it though. Very, VERY emotional, especially near the end.

RahXephon would be something both of you would probably enjoy based on the lists you gave. I found it to be pretty emotional.

...OR try out Evangelion. RahXephon kinda rips off Eva a lot, and Eva isn't as romance-centered as RahXephon, but it's a lot deeper, and it'll have you up nights just THINKING. I'd recommend Eva over RahXephon.

FLCL is also something I could see both of you enjoying. It's very multi-layered - on the outside it's a nonsensical comedy, but there's a LOT going on beneath the surface, and it's only six episodes.

Jin-Roh is a complex, dark, and extremely emotional movie set in an alternate post-WWII Japan. This one almost brought me to tears.

Of the above, I most highly recommend Kino's Journey. Then, in order, Jin-Roh, Evangelion, FLCL, Eureka 7, RahXephon.

Addendum: I forgot to mention REC, a romance series of ten half-length episodes. It's a really cute love story that gets you really connected to the characters. It's not over-the-top cutesy or anything, it has a very genuine feel to it...it's short (it only takes about three hours to watch the entire series) and definitely worth the time.

ZOMG. I totally left out one of the most obvious.

Gunslinger Girl: A beautiful and artistic anime set in Italy, involving scientifically inhanced little girls that are used in covert speical ops missions. These girls were all either tortured/left to die/used in a life insurance sheme and were left to die, only to be revived and given a second chance at life. The story revolves around these girls and their everyday lives iwth a few episodes dealing with missions.

x2 on this, you'll like it because it deals with girl's emotions, and their conflicts of love (henrietta and her love for her caretaker) and the ordeals they have to go trou with being left to die, and now being a hitman-cyborg. But you're boyfriend will love it because...well because it has cute girls with big guns and shooting and dying people :|

Have you tried Last Exile? It's a science fiction epic. Lots of battles, but lots of personality and humanity between them.

Coyote Ragtime Show is a pretty cool action series so far.
