Anine Worth Watching

Post by Ginger Gouki » Tue Nov 27, 2007 9:45 am

Friends, I have been watching anime for a long time now, quite a number of years and to tell the truth, I am bored.

What I have always loved about anime are the new ideas, the storylines that actualy move you, not hagged repeats or rehashing of the same thing. I currently only follow Bleach and Naruto, shamefull as that is (Bleach is just due to my Zombie Powder obsession, Naruto is worlds of lame, but some-how adictive. I dont enjoy it in the same way an alcoholic wouldnt clame to enjoy vodka).

To be honest, i'd written of the medium all together (sticking to manga as best I could) after getting halfway thro deathnote (when our Light gets all goody-goody agane), I gave up. For this, I was forced to watch the rest a couple a weeks back and yes, I loved it (very powerfull ending). In desbrate need of something to watch wile I eat breakfast, I went on to see all of Gantz and was highly impressed, if only by its sheer brutal nature.
Im thinking, there must be more out there, its just skipped under my radar, right?

So yes, I need recomendations. I need those of us who really know anime to tell me, what is worth the time and money these days? Where has the insprational stuff all gone?

(If your going to recomend an anime you've used in an AMV, go ahead and drop an link for it)
"Its 16kg, 39cm and holds 6+1 13mm rounds, each shell is made from a baptized linkin park album and the casings are pure Konoha head-bands. No freak fanboy could eat these and come back for more"

well it depends on what you like...
I thought code geass was masterfully done

the artwork/animation in Air and Kanon (2006) are the best I've seen anywhere, story is good too imo but it's a bit slower paced

Higurashi no naku koro ni (When they cry) is another good one I've run into. Lots of violence and mystery, but sadly US distribution seems to have stopped about halfway through the series (since Geneon went belly-up)

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a pretty good comedy I thought

Fate/Stay night is worth mentioning too

If you are a true anime critic, I would recommend Monster.
It is one of the most beautifully written things I have ever seen.

I'd like to quote Otohiko from the "Your Favorite Anime" Topic. He can describe it much better than I.
Otohiko wrote:Anime : Monster
Reason(s) : Very mature, genuinely deep and often as creepy as it is inspiring; offers little in the way of action, humor, fanservice, or bright flashy art - and everything in terms of plot, athmosphere and character. Although it does center around some pretty contrived conspiracies, there is nothing supernatural involved and everything ultimately comes down to human nature - and this show does raise some extremely poignant (and more or less unanswerable) ethical questions.
Also, it's set in 1990s Europe and revels in very accurate athmosphere - visually and otherwise (it's surprisingly well-aware of social issues in post-communist Europe, for example). The art, while not flashy as I said before, soaks in beautiful European cities and landscapes, and the characters designs - many of which border on ugly - are realistic and unglorified. Also, in a break from the usual teen domination of everything, the protagonist is in his late 30s - ironically that's a median age for the cast, who with a few exceptions are all adults.
All in all, a breath of fresh air who want a bit less flash and a bit more substance in their anime.

Where has the inspirational stuff gone, indeed. I've felt disillusioned with anime lately too. There has to be more substance! The animation is beautiful, the character designs make me squirm with delight, the songs make me bop my head and shake my ass, but at the end of the night, I want my head filled with more exciting thoughts than "Man Ichigo is cool!!! ...!!! ...!!!"

RECOMMENDS: (none of these are my videos, just some favourite examples of the anime)

Earth Girl Arjuna - issues that people in the 'real world' (GASP) are struggling with, like abuse to the earth, gene manipulation, pesticide use, abortion etc, all through the emotionally dramatic lense of this teenage girl destined to live her life (and kind of sort of save the world).

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (So Long Mr. Despair) - One word: Different. Amazingly visual. Fluffy, dark humour, that tricks you into thinking maybe there is some awesome message they're trying to tell you.... but no. It's fun. But it's unique fun.

(just a short clip vid)

Kino's Journey - Slow paced, non-chronological, but it's got some action, a hardcore protagonist, paradoxes that make you think, inspiring and disturbing scenes.

Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) - Okay... it begins kind of, 'what?' and fluffy, but Season 3 is mind blowing... to me anyway. And it's not... that... shoujo. Er, there are less frills than most shoujo anime, but more roses. The issues that they've embedded are very sexual and very thought provoking, the end of the series is one of those mind blowing ones if you try to analyze it. Messed up, original, sensational, blah blah!

(this vid is for the movie, not the series... very few good Utena vids for the series....)

Prolly check out the movie Angel's Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) and the anime Mushishi, but, I haven't consumed them yet... oh, and maybe you could try RaXephon but I only got to episode 3... o.o why haven't I finished/started these yet?! But I've been interested.

Ahaha, lemme add more....

Gankutsuou (The Count of Monte Cristo) - based on the novel with a sci-fi twist, this anime is full of betrayal, intrigue and mystery. Can't recommend an AMV because most of them are spoiler-crazy. And you do NOT want to be spoiled :3

And Samurai Champloo! Because it's a brilliant mix~ of shit~ and stuff~ but everyone knows that~

I have to say Simoun, and Byousoku 5 Centemeters (5 Centimeters Per Second).

Simoun, while having a fair bit of shoujo ai in it, is a very well done series, and has an absolutely amazing ending. It's rather different than a lot of anime, and even though it's a 2006 anime, it uses older animation techniques mixed with nicely done 3D rendering.

Byousoku 5 Centemeters ~a chain of short stories about their distance~ Is absolutely amazing. It has such a heartbreaking story, and is absolutely stunning visually.
