I'm new to anime and looking for some good shows...
I've borrowed alot of different shows from a few friends over the past few months and have gotten through quite alot of series, and and am wondering what to watch next.
Just so you don't go recommending stuff I've already seen, these are the series I have watched up until now:
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell : Standalone Complex (1st and most of 2nd season)
Last Exile
Kino's Journey
Haibane Renmei
Azumanga daioh
Neon Genesis Evangelion (as well as EoE)
Serial Experiments Lain
Now and Then, Here and There
Death Note
Full Metal Alchemist (up through 16th episode)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (up through 7th episode)
Lucky Star

In before Pas!
Clannad.
I also recommend Code Geass and both Higurashi no Naku Koro ni seasons as well as Baccano! and ef - a tale of memories.
And if you like tsundere lolies, Shakugan no Shana and Zero no Tsukaima are two of my favs. ;)

A place to start...
- Something that excites with style: Baccano!, Samurai Champloo (if you loved Cowboy Bebop), Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
- Something that makes you laugh: Full Metal Panic! (and Fumoffu), Seto no Hanayome, Minami-ke
- Something that warms your heart: Kanon 2006, Clannad, Ouran High School Host Club
- Something that has an epic story: Monster (warning: 74 eps.), Seirei no Moribito, Gunslinger Girl (depends)
- Something that shatters innocence: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Elfen Lied (warning: 18+), Beating Angel Dokuro-chan (lol)
- Something that is made of OMGWTFpureawesome: FLCL (only 6 eps), Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Darker than Black (perhaps)
- Something that makes you reach for popcorn: 5 Centimeters per Second, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door

R.O.D. TV (watch the OVA first, though) - wonderful characters
Tenjho Tenge - Fun fighting anime with a serious side as well
Scrapped Princess - Good storyline
Peacemaker Kurogane - one of the most under-rated animes, IMHO - action and drama and buckets of gushing blood
Excel Saga and Puny Puny Poemi - buckets of random silliness
Ninja Nonsense - ditto
Kyo Kara Maoh! - Fantastic story with unexpected gravitas at times, but lots of great humour to balance it out. The characters are awesome.
Risky Safety - very obscure anime, but a sweet little series with a great sense of humour.
Boogiepop Phantom - more non-linear weirdness from the Lain people
I'm sure I'll remember more after I post this...

Hn...I think you might have the same tastes that I do.
So here are a few suggestions.
-Although it's been said, you MUST see Fooly Cooly. You are nothing if you've never seen that.
-Any Gundam series, preferably Gundam Wing.
-Wolf's Rain
-You like Serial Experiments Lain so you'd like Paranoia Agent, Paprika, and Perfect Blue =O All Ps
-Jigoku Shoujo
