Low expectations . . .

Post by MAS PRODUCTIONS » Mon Jan 27, 2003 1:14 am

Here is an interesting question that IM sure we have all ran into. Is there an anime that you had low expectations of but after watching it you were greatly suprised by it. If so what anime was it and what changed your mind?

Azumanga, probably cuz if you try to explain it, its just girls at school and craziness ensues.

Hmm I got 2 and a half. Pita ten=Had already seen the first couple eps thought it was so so. Then the rival kid was introduced and a plot started to develop. Azumanga Daioh=Sounded and looked like it was going to be some kind of shoujo ho hum show=It's not.

Neia under 7=Hehe this is one of the biggest anime disapontments of my career. It looked sucky but I needed a desperation so I bought it. Then it was really good and it had a neat plot and oh wait NO FREAKIN END.

I was caught off-guard by Magic Users Club. Turns out to be one of my fave series now.

For me it was Utena. I avoided it completely at first because it shared the same director as Sailor Moon, which I'm ashamed to say I was once a fan of. I figured Utena was just another pink-sugar infested zit on the face of anime.

That was up until JACON 2000. Adolescence Mokushiroku (the Utena Movie) was playing in one of the anime rooms, and my best friend, who had seen the first tape of the series, highly recommended we go see it. I decided what the hell, I've got an hour and a half to kill until the fanart auction, we might as well. I figured it would keep me from spending money in the dealer room.

After contemplating the movie on the third floor balcony of the Student Union (and incidentally wondering what would happen if we leapt from the railing and tried to catch the kinetic sculpture hanging from the ceiling), we rented all four domestically released tapes of the series, and got our hands on the Black Rose Saga via a mutual friend.

The experience taught me not to judge an anime by its director. What I thought was yet another lame sweet-n-sappy shoujo anime turned out to be one of my favorite mind-bending series of all time.
