There is no greatest anything. However, there are some that are very good.

Akira
Wings of Honnaemise
Princess Mononoke
Metropolis
Perfect Blue
Grave of the Fireflies (just saw it for a the first time. Incredible fails to grasp it's magnificence).

Hope this is enough to get you started. All of the above listed are available in America, so you could just hit your local Best Buy and stock up.

Enjoy!! ^_^

Vampire Hunter D- BloodLust
Ninja Scroll.

I never really did like Akira..
There are plenty of Short Series that are good, get your Hands on Kanon and She the Ultimate weapon. (forgot the jap translation something like Sienka Kanjo.)

Choas angel makes a good point on best anything but i think there is no best anime because there are so many different types of anime.

I agree about akira skanks it is way overrated very boring anyone who likes akira should like dbz if there beef with dbz is slow or boring.

I liked Akira :?

Boogiepop Phantom was ...interesting

Jin Roh - It's really good, it's more like an independent film made into animation than the more typical anime. I say this because it is very much like a well written and produced movie, but it's subject is to "risky" for any Hollywood company to accept. Therefor, a very well written and directed independent film.

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) - It's a real fun series about a 22 year old guy who is trying to become a High School teacher so that he can be around the hot girls. The series has a lot of interesting twists and turns in it and is quite hilarious at points.

Wings of Honneamise (which I know has been mentioned, but this is a fantastic movie)

Anything by Studio Ghibli (though I would urge staring with Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service or Castle in the Sky: Laputa)

Dagger of Kamui

They Were 11 (if you like older anime)

Project A-Ko

Oh...

and for animated films NOT from Japan

Let me suggest

Watership Down (England)

Rock and Rule (Canada)

American Pop (USA)
