The tears were unstoppable, and I wanted to cry violently
<<<<SPOILERS FOR GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES>>>>
<<<<LET THE VIEWER BEWARE>>>>
<<<<IF THERE'S ONE MOVIE YOU SHOULD AVOID SPOILERS FOR, IT'S THIS ONE>>>>
<<<<OK, I WARNED YOU>>>>
I finished watching Grave of the Fireflies for the first time a few days ago.

Why? Why did Setsuko have to die?!?! DAMNIT, SEITA!! If you had swallowed your pride and gone back to your aunt, she would have had food.
Watching Grave of the Fireflies put me through an emotional wringer the likes of which only truly great movies can. I, unfortunately, had heard through accidental reading of spoilers (hence the warnings above) that Setsuko died, so I knew it was coming.; I think it lessened the impact, unfortunately, that I knew it was coming, so I wish that others would not make my mistake and avoid spoilers before viewing.
This is a very moving, and VERY depressing, film. From the beginning, you know that it is not going to end happily, when Seita is living his last days comatose in a train station. Throughout the entire movie, more and more strife kept coming there way, from their house being blown up ot their mother dying, to Setsuko dying, and it depressed me to no end. When the movie ended, my face was wet with the tears that had started near the middle and almost never stopped, and I wanted to just throw myself down on the bed and scream in anguish. I restrained myself because of the people out in the hall, and I didn't really want to make them think something was wrong with me. But, I wanted so badly to just lay on the bed and cry. This movie is very sad and moving, and I love it after just one viewing. Too bad that when I tried to rip the footage for a music video (I had a video pop into my head, and I wanted to make it while I was still feeling the emotion of that first viewing), it read broken blocks and froze on the ripping.
DAMN COMP!! ::shakes fist::
But, yeah. Summarization, I loved Grave of the Fireflies, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to watch an extraordinarily moving film that will most likely make them just break down in tears.
Enjoy!!

Oh man... you're completely right. I can't believe you hadn't seen that yet . And on top of that, Setsuko looks exactly like my little cousin... so it was fun and sad. Very, very sad. Great movie. Second, in my opinion, only to Whispers of the Heart.
Now go download MJ's GotF vid.

Well the boy killed his sister because he absolutley refused to work. There are much better animes out there but if you want to see some jap kid die in a train station this is your only option other than killing one yourself.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most powerful movies in the world of anime and it is one of the best films overall that handles the tragedies of war.
While asses like Mr. Oni, who's shallow, hate-filled tiny pea brain just makes one wince at being of the same nationality as this predjudiced, egocentric toad, people with brains in their heads can't help but be moved by this classic piece of art. Well... I could go on and on about how Mr. Oni is a piece of shit, but I can (and will) do that each and every time I come across one of his empty and useless posts. Let's talk about much more important things...
The creator of the film is Miyazaki's protege (though I can't think of the man's name at the time) and was the creator of Whispers of the Heart, which is another fantastic film (much more upbeat)... Miyazaki did direct the dream sequence in that film (as I have come to understand).
Actually, I have been amazed by all the Ghibli films that I have seen... and I think they are the finest animation studio on the planet at this time.
I think the greatest thing about the movie Grave of the Fireflies is that it is an anime title that you can show to non anime fans. The movie is about important things that should matter to all people... topics that we must face in our real life. Humans are moved by tragedy... only those that are less than human would scoff at such important themes.

There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.

May I offer you a cry towel sir you seem to be in need of one. the fact that you are following me around is disturbing. If you really must see a powerful anime I suggest episode number 8 of Azumanga daioh where Osaka takes off Chiyo chan's pigtails and poor Chiyo chan dies I cried! As for rotting dead japanese boys in train stations that's not my scene.

Hmmm... two votes that I check out Whispers of the Heart... I think I've seen it in Kusoyaro's Iron Chef video... looks creative. (I thought it was a Ghibli film at first from the character designs).

Nothing. Does it have a different title under American distribution, or is it not domestically released yet?

True, true. No child should be working at a young age and having to be caring for a young child. Yes, this is one of those anime that can make a family man cry, even though they are suppose to be tough. I have one little niece that remind me of Setsuko, but not as innocent, just a cute looking. >_<Omega Bahamut wrote:1.) the boy didn't kill his sister if it wasnt for him she probaly wouldnt have lasted as long as she did and 2.) he shouldnt have had to work his normal childhood was taken away from him the second his mother diedMroni wrote:Well the boy killed his sister because he absolutley refused to work.

I know it hasn't been fansubbed yet but that's in the process. My brother brought it home from college, it was a DVD with that and Princess Mononoke on it. I forgot what it was called.Chaos Angel wrote:Nothing. Does it have a different title under American distribution, or is it not domestically released yet?
