Do you have to be physically present at anime conventions...

to take part in the music video competitions? Just curious here. Because I have neither the time nor the means to get to any anime conventions but I would love to showcase or AMVs or participate in competitions. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

No, but it's kind of unfair if you win an award and you're not present.

Best bet is to send your video tagged as non-competing. Then it gets shown but you're not up for a prize that someone in attendance could win.

The contest rules will usually say one way or the other. Each contest has its own character (e.g. provincial or cosmopolitan) and requiring prize winners to be present or not is one way they set that character.

Personally, I think it's cool that entries from Britain and Croatia won at last year's AWA. (This year's Anime Boston has an entry from Hungary.) And I wouldn't expect someone to fly halfway around the planet just to pick up a prize...unless it's AbsoluteDestiny

Contests should be about the videos - wherever they come from - and not so much about the persons behind them. That's just an opinion, of course

I usually go by that the big contests: AWA, Otakon, Anime Expo. It's okay to enter if your not attending. Smaller contests, leave to the local creators who will be spending the money to attend. If you live out of the country where they have no AMV contests, for a small convention ask the coordinators if you may enter. (This is because if you win, and they need to send you prizes they were atleast warned ahead of time.)

Personally I'm getting sick of people who send their videos to every convention under the sun. When there were not as many videos and not as many contests that would have been fine, but the AMV world has expanded beyond that.

(nod nod) I've seen countless videos on the ORG that have like 10+ contests listed under their competitions. Now, I guess it is possible that they attended all those conventions, but probably not. Although it is their perogative what contests they compete in, but I personally prefer to compete in contests I attend out of a respect-thing.

I agree with you on the small conventions and the local creators. It would be unfortunate for someone who is attending to not be able to see their video because someone, who is 1,000 miles away, has their video shown. Also smaller conventions usually have shorter contests and hence the chances of being shown dwindle even more.

I guess we're just seeing that people like to win contests (which is acceptable and predictable). Also from a mathematical standpoint, the more contests you enter, the better your chances (shrug).

I live in the north so we get little news but from the few wandering minstrels that are seen from time to time..

Yeah exactly, I'm sure it happens at every convention where someone submits, attends and doesn't get to see their video. It would be quite unfortunate to have paid for the convention (in hopes of seeing your work) and not see it.

I guess it just has to do with winning. Let me first off say that there's nothing wrong with that of course, but it just seems like a lot of creators (IMHO) are a little too concerned with winning and send to a lot of cons. Like I said, the mathematics are on your side and your bound to win.

However, I for one would like to be at the convention especially to see the nice reaction and accept the honor, but that's just me. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with winning, but I for one wouldn't like to bump some local creator off the list.

Also, if I submitted to like 10 cons and won 1, I don't think that's as meaningful to me. It's sheer statistics and I'm sure one con is gonna like it. It feels a lot better to submit to a few cons and win those...well from a statistics standpoint anyway. But then again this is coming from a loser in terms of contests haha

Live and let live though I guess.
