Utah cons
I have asked around up here at BYU if there are any anime cons in Utah (specifically Utah Valley), and the general consensus has been no. However, I just wanted to make sure that there aren't any (with AMV contest or otherwise) in Utah before I go dismaying.

Does the Church allow that sort of thing in Utah?

Hm....
I lived in Utah for about 3 and a half years, and let me tell you, there are not any cons in Utah-- BUT! There is a con that is right close in Bosie, ID called Anime Oasis, which is a small con, (only about 250-300 people) but its a blast, I went last year, and thats the only one right around the bend...

Hmm. Perhaps the BYU Anime(/fantasy/science fiction/computer games club) could make a field trip out of it. That would be cool.
As for cons, there's nothing inherently bad about most cons (many are trying to be more family-friendly nowadays), but rather the potential crowd they attract and the nature of what is sometimes on sale, being shown, etc. I'm sure the Church would have nothing wrong with people gathering and sharing a common interest across various art mediums.
Maybe there just aren't enough outspoken Utah anime fans....
