I am definitely volunteering for AX 2k4 and I want to know at least what not to do regarding the crowd. Please, let me know about how other cons do as far as organizing the lines, etc.

Last year was fine, it seems. Just do what was done last year.

Oh, and get me my trophy from 2002, thanks :)

I volunteered for AX02. They were shorthanded and bumped me up as staff. I don't staff anymore.

AX02: Technical difficulties. Many videos were sent in videos in formats different from what was specified. It was nearly impossible to get them all to play together. So the tech worked on it delaying entry into the auditorium for three hours. They then let them in, but the problem was not solved. So it was canceled. Long Beach PD was standing by. Luckily, the worst that happend was just a lot of upset fans. Oh, and somebody threw a paper airplane that pierced the screen. AX had to replace that.

So that will stand as the worst case scenario. Overall I would advice keep calm. Be courteous with attendees. Take advice from staffers and other volunteers. Information you give to attendees is on a need to know basis. Keep a con schedule on you at all times. NEVER loose your cool.

Best run con, IMHO, is Katsucon. The difference is that there are not that many attendess so a lot of the challenge you will see at AX does not exist. Katsucon makes good efforts to ensure people drink water. Their attempts are quite entertaining. Staff and voilunteers go up and down the lines with pitchers and cups. I heard alot of people passed out at Otakon this year from heat and dehydration.

As an attendee, the best thing I do in lines is bring my laptop with a charged battery and fill my HD with AMVs.[/b]

I'm no tech master, but I still can't even fathom how this was a problem. Don't most contest coordinators finish this stuff AHEAD of time before the convention? I understand if they were under-staffed, but compiling an AMV contest is work you do behind-the-scenes long before the hour of the contest AT the con... :/

I've never been to AX (and never plan on going), but from what I've been told about '02, it'll (unfortunately) go down as being one of the most laughable contests of all time (right up there with Katsucon 2001's "Linking in the Park").

I thought "Linking in the Park" happened at Katsucon 2002.
