How to combine animes

Ok,

Ive seen this in other AMVs, now I am curious as ever. I have seen istiv's "Spirit Never Dies" and "The Race" vids, and now I ask, how is it done? How can ya combine animes literally into one scene? I have consulted guides before, but it does not yield many answers. Can someone tell me the secret to this? thanks
