For the most part, I don't want an AMV to just remind me of an anime, I want to see something new done with it.
I definitely agree with the variety bit, the more the better..but..
Why use the anime in the first place if it's not to connect with what the audience is familiar with (even if its to take them out of context)? That's what takes it out of the AMV realm for me, to just being digital art, the lack of connection.

So basically, you're only looking at the familiar art-style and not necessarily the anime and the emotions it carries? If so, that brings it back... why use that particular anime at all?

I think there are ideas and emotions within the animation itself, completely separate from the story they are attached to in the anime.

but at the same time they could use almost any video source... they could use japanese live action (but it would be harder to roto)

or american cartoons or something..

Why not just make something of your own that could better convey the concept instead of people watching a 'concept amv' with certain expectations of what the anime is supposed to be within that amv and therefore not allowing your concept video to be totally free from all preconceptions?

You could argue it's what constitutes a 'good' amv, the difficulty in producing a 'concept' which emerge above what people think of the anime prior to the amv. But I do agree with you, I'm no fan of purely conceptual videos.

I knew this would come up once more....Just never thought it would come out of this person of all people.

To me, most people who complain about effects are the people that don't know how to use effects themselves.
First, what is your definition of an AMV?
AMV (Ae-Im-Vi) -1. One of the few hobbies thats taking over youtube.2. A creation that was created without a definition or a set of rules to start with.(In use of a sentence) I think I want to make an AMV with that song. Your amv blows chunks.

But seriously, This is where I feel no one should try to make a definition of an amv and just stick with what their doing right now.

Concept might be important for SOME vids but not all...Like watching a Weird Al amv. You gotta match anime with some of his songs for it to be funny..

I'm not saying every AMV should be like a Randy Newman song.

Overall. How about we stop thinking about concepts vs w/e and just do what we know already. Trying to make a definition of AMV is only gonna hurt yer head in the long run
