Starting From Scratch - Codecs and Programs (Vista)

Post by nmaster64 » Mon Jun 04, 2007 10:44 pm

Hey guys. I wanted to get some opinions on this. I'm about to wipe my computer clean and install Windows Vista, so I'm gonna have to reinstall all my codecs and AMVApp and Adobe Premiere, etc, etc. Now codecs can be kinda finicky, especially if you use any kinds of packs, and you gotta be careful about what you install and in what order sometimes. I used a XP-only codec pack for my current setup, and that worked great, but this time I'm thinking of avoiding packs and installing things one at a time...safer that way...

So I was just wondering what people would recommend installing as an anime junkie and AMV creator when your starting out from scratch. I for the most part know what I'm doing, but I always like to get second opinions to be safe. Any help/ideas/suggestions are appreciated.

suggestion 1: seriously reconsider installing vista (unless you absolutely must have Vista I'd suggest staying with XP at least until vista sp1 comes out)
now in the way of codecs:
huffyuv
lagarith
picvideo mjpeg
CCCP (a codec pack, but it's put together by people who actually have a clue about what they're doing...unlike others like k-lite which give you a whole bunch of junk like divx 3, 3ivx, divx 4, etc)

that should pretty much do it, CCCP includes ffdshow. FFDshow can potentially cause problems...but nothing that can't be fixed easily

For the record, Vista's more stable than people give it credit for. There won't be a service pack for a long time, unless MS does it just to satisfy people like you...but really the only problem with it is the hardware requirements. I would never recommend it to anyone in terms of buying it, but I got it for free (legally, MS happens to like me), and yeah I need it...

I had forgotten about CCCP, that actually does sound like the best choice probably moving to Vista...then definitely Huffy and Lagarith...

Picvideo mjpeg? That seems kinda random to me...lol...

just opinion based on what i've heard/read

anyway...picvideo mjpeg is very fast (which makes it good for rendering previews in your editing program)

Vista's great.

Half a gig or RAM to simply idle.
More than a dozen exploits discovered on the day it launched.
Built-in DRM tools.

The reasons to buy are astounding.
