Huffyuv for Mac?

Post by Greggus1 » Tue Jun 05, 2007 2:04 pm

Does anyone have any kind of insider info on the progress of the conversion, or if it's happening at all? I'm getting really annoyed.

I've never heard anything about huffyuv being ported to the mac, and I'm fairly sure it wont happen.

There is an early alpha of a port here. It's really limited and doesn't appear to have had any progress in a while, but it's a project worth keeping an eye on.

I use SheerVideo codec for editing. Much smaller filesizes than Huffyuv or Lagarith, and it is lossless. Not free, though.

At least from what it claims, its files are larger than HuffYUV or Lagarith:
Work twice as fast at half the uncompressed file size,
HuffYUV and Lagarith compress in most cases more than to half the size. I wanted to download the Windows beta to test it, but they want to know too much.

My tests give Sheer a slight space advantage on anime, but I'd love to see someone else test it out. Haven't tested it on live-action footage. I can also playback Sheer without jitters on my slowish comp...can't say the same for Lagarith (and occasionally HuffYUV).

I'd basically heard of the port Lantis mentioned, but that isn't moving at all anymore, it seems. It's just too bad Mac and Windows can't agree on a single lossless codec : It'd make things easier.

We make deliberately conservative claims, because we'd rather have our customers pleasantly surprised than unpleasantly disappointed.

If you're doing traditional 2D animation with a lot of constant shading (large areas with exactly the same pixel value), Apple's Animation codec will compress better. If your animations contain gradients, realistic shading, high detail, or real-world video footage, SheerVideo will compress better.

In general, we respect your anonymity. For the QuickTime edition of SheerVideo, available for both Windows and Mac, you don't need to enter any information.

However, the AVI edition is still in beta because of compatibility issues with some popular applications, and we don't want to be swamped with tech support requests until the application developers fix them. We plan to release the AVI edition within a few weeks. The information we want from beta testers helps us diagnose reported bugs. But a lot of downloaders ignore the request and just supply an email address. In any case, we never disclose your personal information to anyone for any reason.
