Fanbase (or growing) = Lucky Star ppl seem to be changing their a-m-v.org avatars to this lately coz Konota is awesome XD
Personal Favourite this season = Claymore (think female protagonist version of Berserk, the action scenes are =O)
Close runner up for favourite this season and getting quite popular = Romeo x Juliet (awesome awesome animation and has fangirls squeeing for Romeo, Juliet is more of a tomboy in this one so im guessing not as many people connect =\)
Not well known but I like it = Serei no Moribito one of those feudal china/japan type animes, but once again brilliant animation
Hayate The Combat Butler is quite whacky, maybe too whacky for you... it's really one of the most random animes I have ever seen but it's quite fun err ask Kitsuner for more info on this hahaha =P

Further back, a good drama = Kanon 2007
And if you're into CLAMP character designs and mecha with lots of juicy plot twists and currently has a huge fanbase in Japan = Code Geass

I just watched Manabi Straight...cliche, but in a weird kinda new way?
Hayate no Gotokou is fun.
Lucky Star is fun, but not to be taken seriously. (also has a bunch of references to other shows/games/stuff, that's about half the humor) and yeah, Konata is my new heroine.
Also watching Gurren Lagann...completely retarded and over the top, but awesome. Did I mention awesome?

I understand Kung Fu Jimmy Chow is all the rage right now among young hip and happening Japanimation enthusiasts.

Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

If Wiki is telling the truth, I'm pratically a mix between Konota and Haruhi both of which are voiced by Aya.

Any anime with Aya Hirano's voice is worth a looksie:

Death Note: Misa
Haruhi: erm, Haruhi? ;)
Lucky Star: Konata

Claymore is good
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi has some of the hottest martial Arts boobies since the likes of Tenjou Tenge and Ikki Tousen.
Seto no Hanayome - Mermaid Yakuza, BEAT THAT FOR ORIGINALITY BITCHES!

I need to get to Gurren and Romeo & Juliet asap
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
