UJ-210/215 and ripping footge in HD

Post by Mr Pilkington » Sat Jun 09, 2007 9:12 am

Sorry if this has been posted. I searched earlier with very old results and nothing definitive.

I have acquired several Panasonic UJ-210 (tray-loading) and UJ-215 (slot-loading) slim 12.7mm BD-RE drives for use in my new system. I want to rip in HD with these drives but none of the tools I have will accommodate. Is there a tool available yet? Or and I going to have to learn code over night? Because waiting is just not an option :b

Because of the way HD discs are protected, it takes a bit more effort to rip one than it does with a standard DVD. All I can say is check around doom9's forums, they've been working out the right keys for various titles, as well as beta ripping software (that might not work with all players yet).

BLU-RAY is a high def disc type. If I recall both HD DVD and Blu-ray use a [very slight] variation of the h.268 codec. In fact the only reason Blu-Ray has better compression is because it uses a blue-violet laser an the later end of the visible light spectrum vs. HD-DVD which just uses a blue laser (once again if a recall, too lazy to wiki), giving Bu-ray format a shorter wavelength.

But both broadcast 1080p, BD-RE was my preference for reasons. 1.) More space. 2.) Someone actually produced a slim, slot-loading unit.

Blu-ray currently uses MPEG-2, VC-1 (WMV9), and H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) for video codecs.

There is a tool available to rip (and decode) HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies, but you'll need to find the proper AACS key to decrypt the video.

Do a search for BackupBluray or BackupHDDVD. Start here at Doom9's forums: http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=9
