Sci-fi anime suggestions

Post by CrackTheSky » Mon Jun 11, 2007 11:42 am

I need some suggestions of good sci-fi anime. My interests in real life are focused mainly on space and physics, and I was wondering if there's any good hard sci-fi anime out there - in other words, anime with a sci-fi theme that is scientifically accurate (or close to). I haven't really come across anything that I'm looking for, and frankly it wouldn't surprise me if none existed.

Also, if you can't think of any sci-fi that uses scientific theories in a realistic way, could you try to list some good anime mainly set in space (besides Voices of a Distant Star)? A mixing of both would be ideal, and that's really the main purpose of the thread, but I'd also really like some good, spacey stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Random plugging of Gunbuster/Diebuster :/

Has kickass physics/science/space battles, supposed impossible physics, etc.

Most of the mecha anime factor in some realism in terms of velocity, time/space distortion, and mecha theory. Some of it is sprinkled scientific jargon, but that's not to say that they don't make good use of it in each episode. As for realism, a lot of it is theory at best and imagination interpretation at worst.

iDOlM@STER: Xenoglossia handles formulas and theories surrounding impact stress and mecha damage control, along with what i suspect will soon include dimensional travel and time /space distortions.
Neon Genesis Evangelion has some commentary on beam curvature, gravity, force field theories, among other things.
RahXephone sets itself up to handle explanations on dimensional rifts and time distortion.

Crest of the Stars and its sequels Banner of the Stars, Banner II, and Banner III.

They actually spend a decent amount of time explaining some of the technology to the main character who hasn't been exposed to it before. More in Crest than Banner, but if you like giant-scale space opera, you'll like CotS.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - One of the most underrated space animes out there
Surprisingly long (the full OVA clocks in at 109 eps +2 movies,) but since it was done as a made-for-video series, the quality shows.

Granted, the focus is less on the science, more on the politics, but nevertheless...worth a viewing if you get the chance.

You should check out Noein. It's not really set in space so much, but the it's some awesome sci fi, and the concept is based around quantum physics and it's theories (though I can't really comment on it's accuracy since I'm hardly and expert on quantum physics; however, I'd say it has a good amount of believability).
