I would say that I enjoyed Paranoia Agent a great deal despite it being quite a departure from traditional anime (and televised series in general) norms. Actually, reviewing other comments on this thread, it seems that anything Satoshi Kon is involved with is a good bet...

Mindgame. By far, on of the most unique movies I've ever seen. Interesting story with equally interesting animation. Do yourself a favor and find it.

These three are "realistic", i.e. there is nothing intrinsically "anime"
about them save the fact that they are animated.

Fucking thirded for both.

Manabi Straight - School life drama, girls only, but something about the animation style and storytelling is really different. Can't quite put my finger on it...but the characterizations are somehow cliche and really different at the same time. Nice example of taking existing ideas and getting a new result...and the animation is really pretty.

Gurren Lagann - DO IT...has it's cliches, but it's pure fun.

Still have Dennou Coil on my list to begin watching soon as well.
