Couple questions about dvd burning;;

Is MPEG-1 / MPEG-2 the only formats burnable on a DVD? (for viewing on television) If so is there any quality loss when converting/transcoding .avis/.mp4s to that format? (And how can I do this?)

Also;; I have SHnY DVDs 1&2, but they are in chronological order. So I want to rip the DVDs onto my computer then reburn to a DVD-R with a different episode play order. (How would I go about doing this?)

Currently I have Nero 6 (never been touched >_>)


Oh and, one last question for HDDVD / Blu Rays: Can you burn the .mp4 format onto them? aka what formats do they support

If you mean in a stand alone DVD player, then yes, MPEG-1/MPEG-2 are the only standards. You can get DVD players that play other formats, however. And, yes, since both formats are lossy, if you are converting/transcoding, there will be some quality loss.

Nero might be able to do it. Essentially, what you'll need to do is rip in IFO mode, select then probably just swap VOB numbers, and using DVD creation software burn them back.

Well, the HD-DVD/Blue-Ray standard is H.264/AVC so, if the container isn't .mp4, you can avoid losing any data, since you'll just be switching containers and not codecs.

I'm using TMPGenc with Scintillas guide to converting to MPEG2, I have all that down with letterboxing and stuff, but how would you convert to 16:9 regularly?
Like without letterboxing it and converting to 4:3 (I've like tried everything in TMPGenc and it only gives me 640x480 / 740x480 rendering sizes) So it's always strechted =\ (reason I don't want letterboxing is for a widescreen tv, I think the letterboxes would show on that)

If you want to encode anamorphic widescreen video, then feed it 720x480 video without letterboxing and set "Aspect ratio" to "16:9 525 line (NTSC)".

I did that and when I play it its 4:3 (when rendering too) ><

What the media info shows, am I doing something wrong or.... When you play on a dvd player does it auto detect it as 16:9 and corrects aspect lol

DVD players should detect the aspect ratio flag and display it correctly. What software player are you using? I know some of them don't respect the aspect ratio flag.

Didn't know about that flag thing, I did get a kinda popup message "You'll need to install DVD software on your computer to playback MPEG-2"

I tried playing it with VLC and MPC, I'll try it with a DVD later I'm sure it'll work but right now I gotto go, thanks for your help!
