Example: Daniel Chang makes lots of cartoon romance video using sappy 80s songs, so he must have a sappy and unrealistic view of love and women.
OR...considering the crowd of fangirls in his wake, he may have a perfectly realistic view of love and women, or at least, young women.

And how could you tell the difference between one conclusion or the other without a waving of hands to sense the waves coming off his brain?

Sometimes a video...is just a video.
Were you at AWA 2004 or something? -_- If I added 10 to the age of said fangirls, I'd have my own harem like that Bakadeshi guy :P.

Did I mention I hate you?

It would be a good way to get an abysmally incomplete insight into a person's character. People are not only what they express artistically, and people who do, express vastly different proportions of themselves. A guy obsessed with death in his art might go out drinking with friends and just be a regular guy. Kafka's reading sessions among friends, where he brought his new work, used to cause them all to collapse into fits of laughter.

I thinki came up with a more concrete answer.

As a living being, anything you do, say, think, believe, etc. can be directly atribiuted to "who you are" because - simply put - the one defines the other. Unless you have powers of deep insight with the psycoanalitic process, you're not really qualfied to draw any difinitive conclusions about anyone (except maybye yourself), so it's all a bit speculative at best. Using the example of romantic videos, one may either be a romantic themselves, or may enjoy creating romantic videos. Either scinerio "says something about the creator" - so making any sort of deal about it is pretensious posturing by making use of logical falacies (like the broad, leading questions of a psychic). Stated vaguely, the answer can't be NO, unless the individual is mentically handicapped in such a way that they can act without thought or intent, and that's just taking the (i assumed implied) stance that you're asking about acts in which the individual's sentience is the only important bit (otherwise the fact that the 6 foot tall canvas is only painted to about 4 feet up is a direct result of the painter being in a wheelchair - it says something about them, no?).

A successful piece of art should stand on it's own, something the viewer of any form can enjoy without the artist needs to stand their and explain everything. You could probably discern some deeper details from failed artists, but on the whole;Intimate details? No. A rough idea of some of their interests and it's modifying opinion, yes.

While thats true, I think you can get a pretty good idea about what a person is about if you have a decent selection of their work. How good of an idea is debating semantics, but I think you can gander a decent perception of who a person is and what they are about by looking at their art.

I think sometimes what an artist DOESN'T do sometimes says a lot more than what they do. This case holds in AMVs especially I think. Example: I've never done a romance video. You can get from this that:

1. Love/Sex/Women don't directly motivate me creatively.
2. I don't get off watching anime girls
3. I think romance in anime is dumbed down, adolescent dribble.

A few people who have met me in the AMV community thought I would be a lot more serious and sober because they see all my dark videos. I'm not like that at all in real life, but I have that side of me that I keep to myself.

I think regardless of how someone presents themselves (lets not argue that as it would take up about 5 threads), if they express it in their art, it is present in their character SOMEWHERE. It might be a very well hidden, not-often-talked-about portion of their character, but it is there.

Somewhere in my brain, I am fascinated by the idea of growing into this gigantic powerful monster and destroying the world. So I made a video about it. While no one may get that from meeting me, or fucking me, or making me breakfast or whatever, its still there. If I didn't make such dark art, I would be a lot darker of a person.

I only use myself as an example because I don't think anyone would like me psych-analyzing them based on their videos.

lol beo, give it a rest, amvs aren't this complicated.

99% of the time it's someone putting two things they really like together and making something they really really like.
