It would be a good way to get an abysmally incomplete insight into a person's character. People are not only what they express artistically, and people who do, express vastly different proportions of themselves. A guy obsessed with death in his art might go out drinking with friends and just be a regular guy. Kafka's reading sessions among friends, where he brought his new work, used to cause them all to collapse into fits of laughter.
While thats true, I think you can get a pretty good idea about what a person is about if you have a decent selection of their work.
How good of an idea is debating semantics, but I think you can gander a decent perception of who a person is and what they are about by looking at their art.
I think sometimes what an artist DOESN'T do sometimes says a lot more than what they do. This case holds in AMVs especially I think. Example: I've never done a romance video. You can get from this that:
1. Love/Sex/Women don't directly motivate me creatively.
2. I don't get off watching anime girls
3. I think romance in anime is dumbed down, adolescent dribble.
A few people who have met me in the AMV community thought I would be a lot more serious and sober because they see all my dark videos. I'm not like that at all in real life, but I have that side of me that I keep to myself.
I think regardless of how someone presents themselves (lets not argue that as it would take up about 5 threads), if they express it in their art, it is present in their character SOMEWHERE. It might be a very well hidden, not-often-talked-about portion of their character, but it is there.
Somewhere in my brain, I am fascinated by the idea of growing into this gigantic powerful monster and destroying the world. So I made a video about it. While no one may get that from meeting me, or fucking me, or making me breakfast or whatever, its still there. If I didn't make such dark art, I would be a lot darker of a person.
I only use myself as an example because I don't think anyone would like me psych-analyzing them based on their videos.
