Death Note. Not as gory as Elfin Lied, but it still has lovely work in it. Involves a self-rightous kid, and a mystic notebook that can kill anybody who's name is written in it. Plus, I just think it's amazing.

Not too much supernatural as amazing abilities:

Read or Die (3 episodes 1/2hour in length) Really cool, worth the watch/buy.

If you like that there's an extended Read or Dream but is much longer (and in my opinion not as great).

Also you can try:

Blood: the last vampire - It's a movie. It's got some amazing art.

If you like that then there's an extension of plot: Blood+ which is the tv series that it spawned. (also not as great in my opinion).

...Given, in both instances the art changes when made into tv shows... and I just prefer the original styles.
