Having problems... probably Vista ><;;

So, let me start by saying I'm still 100% against Vista. Now that's out of the way, I bought a new laptop yesterday, love it. Unfortunatly they only come with Vista now (unless you pay money for a custom one) and I don't have a valid copy of XP, so I'm TRYING to edit with it.

I'm running 2GB of memory, Dual Core 2.0, with a 256MB Intel Chipset Graphics processor, so I know this shouldn't be an issue. Installed AMVApp 3.0 Beta, no problems other than the tests not running (I'm assuming do to some new paths and issues there) and Adobe Premiere Pro with no problem.

I ripped my VOB files, processed my .d2v file and went to go import into Premiere (with the standard MPEG2 AVS import). Then, it stops, only thing I get it the "importing files" dialog and nothing happens. Keep in mind, nothing freezes or doesn't start, it just doesn't do anything (after waiting even 30min or so). That's the best I can get... hoping somebody has some idea's (other than installing XP, haha).

As a side note, I was going to troubleshoot with Virtualdubmod.... well, from what I can tell it doesn't run on Vista (which completely sucks). I would love to get a copy that works or an alternative for this as well. VDM won't even run. >_>

??? I'm on vista and vdubmod works fine... What happens when you try to use vdub?

and, if vegas isn't handling the avs', just use vfapi (google search).

Really? That's good to hear about VDubMod... I tried the one in the AMVApp and downloading a seperate file, they both have the error "VirtualDub Has Stopped Working" ...Which is of course the stupid little Vista error.

I'll try the vfapi...

Okay, I tried that and... it works! Thank you so much for the advice... I would like to know about the whole VDub thing though, as I usually use it as part of my exporting/encoding process.... ^^

No, I never have had any problems with vdubmod on my comp. I'm cool like that.

Okay, now I'm ticked again... I thought this process was working (I could preview the video files and such)... but when I actually drag a clip into the timeline everything goes black.

AND, VD Mod still isn't working. Does ANYONE have any idea's? Thanks. >_>

You mentioned that you were using an Intel Graphics processor with 256 MB memory. Is it an HP brand? Also, please tell me if you are sure that you do not have an Nvidia graphics chip like go 7200 or go 7400. And, is the 256 MB graphics memory dedicated?

You can find the dedicated video memory of the card from the advanced properties of the adaptor. I'm pretty sure its your GPU, and perhaps why taifunbrowser never had any issues like this.

Also, what version of Vista do you have? There's both the 32bit and 64 bit versions (Vista Ultimate is the 64bit, as far as I know, the only one), and a lot of older programs (32bit) might have compatability issues. Especially with the Duo Core 2, which is a 64 bit processor (if I'm not mistaken) you might have gotten Vista Ultimate pre-loaded. Depending on what version of Premiere you have, you could run into these compatability problems. (I should note, even with the 32bit version, Vista has been known to cause problems with 'older' software). If it's Premiere CS3, then it should be running fine, and any issue are probably with your GPU, as M.H.A.Q.S. said, since integrated graphics are the suck. It might be your RAM (though with 2Gigs, it's probably not), depending on what sort of encoding is used and how intensive the decoding is.

I'm also assuming that you know DivX/XviD is a no-no in Premiere, or any non-linear editor for that matter, thus avoiding that whole territory.

It's a 256 dedicated video processor... I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop with Vist Home Premium preloaded. (though I've uninstalled many of the programs)... it's a 32 bit processor and operating system.

With 2 gigs of memory I also very much doubt that the problem lies there. With my video it's direct DVD rip, trying to import either AVS files (from .d2v projects) or making fake AVI's to import.

I'm running into problems both ways. Using just Premiere Pro, might look into getting CS3 though to see if it fixes any problems....

You mean you get sound and the processes are working fine? Is it a BSOD (Black Screen of Death)?

When I said it is your GPU, I meant the faulty drivers. Download the most STABLE/latest drivers from Intel's site. Disable Vista's automatic Updates. Uninstall any drivers you got for the Video Driver and make sure they are properly uninstalled. Restart Windows.

When Windows starts up, it'll say it is searching for VGA drivers. Just run the downloaded setup, usually WinVGA_151.exe etc. If it gives ya an error, try it once again. Don't let vista install its OWN drivers. I hope this will certainly solve your video issues.
