SHORT GUIDE: GETTING AVISYNTH TO WORK IN PREMIERE 6
OK People, here's my gift to you all after working at it for hours upon hours and then finally making it work!
First step, follow ErMaC's guide to the mark, doing evyerhing he says EXACTLY. Next comes some stuff he left out. Either that or I'm a moron and missed something.
When you import the .avs file, it'll look black. ErMaC says to change the aspect ratio of it to 1:0 (Square pixels) - Do that. ALso make sure your project is being edited in 720x480. That's also important.
NEXT
If you try to view the clip, it looks black, and if you look at it on the timeline, it looks black. Here's the problem!
Open the clip by double clicking it. Once in the clip window, resize the clip window to make it BIGGER sot hat the video can be displayed at full 720x480 - BANG there it is. From the clip window, you can place "bits" of the video onto the timeline using the open and close buttons { and }. Once you do that, then click the overlay button to drop that section onto the timeline. It'll still look black... but place it where you want, and then do file - export timeline - frame and save the bmp. The bmp will show you that the vid is there ont he timeline and is just fine.
HERES SOEMTHING CONFUSING -
You can't get the timeline preview window to resize to a full 720x480, so you'll be diting on the timeline blindly. This SUCKS. If anyone knows a way to resize that, pelase post and add to this thread.
HERE'S A TIP -
If you have the hard disk space to do so, create your entire AMV using clips made in DVD2AVI first. This will be lower quality, but you won't be editing blind with black clips. Once everything is placed on the timeline right, you can drop clips from your .avs file onto the timeline, replacing the vid clips you had on it. That way the high quality vob clips replace the low quality avi/mpg clips.
ONE MORE THING THAT I HAVE NOTICED -
For some reason, when you start your project, or change your project settings, don't use the DV presets. Use the "Video for Windows" presets - For some reason, they seem tow work better.
I hope this helped at least one person out there, and I hope that someone out there has an answer to the mystery of why the preview window won't resize to larger than 640x480.

That's a waste of time. Just hold down alt and click the timeline to render that frame and it will appear in the preview window (provided the window is 720x480)Garylisk wrote: It'll still look black... but place it where you want, and then do file - export timeline - frame and save the bmp. Well, relying on the timeline image isn't even necessary.Garylisk wrote: HERES SOEMTHING CONFUSING -

You can see the start and end points of your clips by clicking the edges (to change the in and out points) - when you do that they appear in the preview window. I don't even have the timeline set to show small thumbnails on the timeline - it's just a waste of reasources ^_^
Actually, dvd2avi sucks at writing avi's - you'd be much better off using virtualdub to do it for you.Garylisk wrote: HERE'S A TIP -

Because you havent chosen square pixels for your project. You have to choose square pixels for everything. This is probably why you find the lack of timeline images annoying cause you can't render to the preview window. Change to square pixels and you can render to the timeline window and you will see the clip in the timeline window when you are adjusting the length of your clips.Garylisk wrote: I hope this helped at least one person out there, and I hope that someone out there has an answer to the mystery of why the preview window won't resize to larger than 640x480.

I have chosen square pixels. It just plain won't size up any higher.
Why, does it work for everyone on Earth but me?

Appearently Premiere is an idiot. It started working this morning for no appearent reason. Everything seems fine now.
I wonder WTF was wrong with it that it wasn't sizing the preview window up.. I didn't jack to it to make it work.. it just started working.
Mind you, I'm not gonna argue about it! It's working, after all!
