Convert MKV files
I am looking for a free mkv file converter, or a cheap one .
I was looking at river past video cleaner and it's demo seemed to work real well though it still compressed the video after it was converted. Also it's $30 which right not is a lot.
Is there a program that will allow me to convert mkv files to a files that premiere can read that isn't compressed? Since I don't want it compressed while being converted then being compressed again when I'm finished with the video.
also is VirtualDubMod a converting tool? i can't seem to figure out what it is.
I'm also interested in converting ogm files but that seems to be easier than mkv's.
Help appreciated.

Virtual Dub is a single line finishing editor that allows you to visually see if your filtering is being done correctly instead of guessing how it will turn-out.Toshiyan wrote:.. is VirtualDubMod a converting tool? i can't seem to figure out what it is.

How about free: mkvtoolnix, or if the command line scares you there is: MkvExtractGUIToshiyan wrote:I am looking for a free mkv file converter, or a cheap one .
That will let you demux the streams into seperate files, then you can use VirtualDubMod (assuming the video stream is in an AVI) to "Fast Recompress" the video to Uncompressed (or whatever).
However, I should point out that this is a poor method of getting clips for AMVs (if that is what you are doing), you are better off getting the DVD and using that as your source.

Comprehension question absent banana.Toshiyan wrote:Does when virtual dub is encoded the video is it live? like do you watch the whole clip while it's encoding?
Do you mean: "Do I have to watch it encode"? If so, then no, there are a couple of checkboxes that stop the source and destination from being displayed during the encode (this will make it encode faster too), or you could just walk away from your computer.

Not sure, it has been a while since I have used it (I am a Mac user), but I seem to recall that it is thread based so it will probably depend upon the codec it is using - i.e. if the codec can use multiple cores then it will.Toshiyan wrote:Will virtual dub use all four cores of my quad core?
Not at all. The worst that can happen is that your computer may be a bit sluggish, and the encoding may take a little longer. But that is it.Toshiyan wrote:would it be a problem doing other things while it's encoding?

nope; only as much processor power as it needs.kmv wrote:Not sure,Toshiyan wrote:Will virtual dub use all four cores of my quad core?
almost got it right ^_^ .. you can set the "Priority Setting" while it is Encoding to "low" and it will not interfere with anything else that you are doing at that time. Virtual Dub is not a resource-hog; it only uses what it needs.kmv wrote:Not at all. The worst that can happen is that your computer may be a bit sluggish, and the encoding may take a little longer. I don't think he was worried if it would hog resources, but, rather, if it would effectively use what was there (as in all 4 cores) so everything would get done faster.
