I've seen Drist referred to or considered Punk Metal, but the distinction is sort of blurred, as at times they tend to sound rather similar to what would be seen as nominal mainstream hard rock - the genre itself is often sort of an anecdote saying 'you know Suicidal Tendencies? yeah, kind of like that, but maybe not as thrashy'. Their cover of "Stripped" betrays a higher amount of the hardcore influence (I really cannot believe that one of the reviews referred to it as a Rammstein cover, though - especially considering Rammstein's cover of the song was just embarrassing, I can't believe people actually think they were the original artist; maybe I'm just a tad biased, though, since I actually used the original Depeche Mode version for a video).

Iced Earth Fan wrote:Gothic Metal is a genre that is widely debated, as some bands that aren't really even metal try place themselves in it.....stuff.... Nightwish, Epica Lacuna Coil, Dimmu Borgir, Evergrey, Within Temptation, Cradle of Filth, Penumbra, all can fall into this catagory.
WOW. Seriously? You've been lis.. WOW. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil and Epica are all lead by female vocals.. this is why you grouped them into 'Gothic' Metal right? Give me ONE good example of a Nightwish song that could even REMOTELY be considered Goth. WOW. Much more appalling is your catagorization of Evergrey into this catagory. Wow. 10 years? Class begins now.

Some bands like Rhapsody Of Fire create a sound so uniuqe, that you fit the sound to one genre that already exists.[/quote]

What is that genre... Terrible?

Yeah, really. Evergrey is closer to either progressive metal or NWOBHM. Occasionally gloomy does not mean goth. Goth, I believe, is characterized more by heavy use of acoustic and piano/keyboard, with slowly paced distorted electric guitar. I mean, that's like cookie-cutter goth. The basis from which all goth is derived, but there's still variation and levels of "heaviness". I'd say it's more like Tristania, Theatre of Tragedy, Therion, Trail of Tears, any other band that starts with 'T', and arguably Agalloch. Arguably solely because of the amount of folk influence.

And I like how you include prog out of the basics.

Let's not turn this into a judgement of value.

Slipknot is not Metal. Linkin Park is not Metal. Numetal is not metal, it's rap with guitars. numetallers hate other rappers and want to stand out by changing their name. They fail (and no, this wasn't a judgement of value, as anyone who is acquainted with real metal - not necessarily just the die-hard fans like oto said - will immediately know the difference). Rhapsody, by the way, is Epic Metal, which really isn't that different from Power Metal. Rhapsody of Fire is the mental illness of Luca Turilli striking his number one band (he owns three), and the result of what would have been a very expensive lawsuit.

I'm too lazy to write about it in detail, but many genres of Metal can be told apart by the content and structure of the lyrics as well as the instrumentation. (power metal and epic metal can be told apart from others - but not from each other - by the lyrics, black metal, viking metal and goth metal can also be safely categorized by wordings).

Oh, and white metal is weird :|

Oh, and a small consideration on the Heavy Metal genre: in it's earlier installments, it can be easily mistaken for Hard Rock, since it was born from Hard Rock. This also works the other way around. You'll find lots of people saying that Deep Purple were the fathers of Metal (I'm not really sure if I agree) and Van Halen's most famous nstrumental, Eruption, could just as well have been played by Iron Maiden (the lead guitar would have probably been Janick)

Not to mention how much confusion the words 'Goth' and 'Gothic' often inspire, which inevitably leads to having to explain once again that Goth[ic] Rock and Goth[ic] Metal have very little in common - one is a descendant of Punk through Post-Punk, the other from standard Metal lineage via Black, Death, and Doom Metal. Or trying to beat into people's heads that Evanescence falls into neither Goth Rock or Goth Metal.
