A Thought About Windows Movie Maker....

Post by XiaoMovieMaker » Mon Sep 03, 2007 10:44 am

I've been still working on my first AMV and currently, i'm using Windows Movie Maker [WMM].

I have noticed transitions are limited, effects are limited, and the capabilities aren't to extraordinary...

Has anyone seen any "good" - "fabulous" WMM AMVs?
I really want to see some of WMM's capabilities...if not, i'll stop learning XML...

Also note, i did not put this in the WMM help section because i'm asking for AMVs, not assistance

Thanks again~

'Good' and 'fabulous' are very relative terms. Some of my favorite videos aren't necessarily videos that were made in WMM, but easily could have been. You have to understand that it's not at all necessary for a program to have anything more than one video track, one audio track, and the ability to do a crossfade for an AMV to be 'good'.

Instead of focusing on trying to get WMM to do more custom transitions or whatever, focus more on the actual arrangement of your AMV - scene selection, timing, that kind of thing - and you will be able to make a 'good' video. Fancy crap tends to get in the way, anyway.

^Agreed

And what comes to custom transitions, you can made fades longer or shorther by using just a plain black image and cross-fading it with clips. I used to do that lots when I was using WMM. It worked out quite nicely ;)

I'd have a small list of some of better videos I suspect to have been made with WMM, but I'm having a hard time confirming the editing software.

I also have to agree with both CracktheSky and Emong. For really even the simplest editing if done right can produce a good amv. If you song has lyrics I always try to understand what the song is about then come up with a story to fit the characters. Planning for me is an important element. Not everyone who edits does this but I just find it easier. Then once you get the story and scenes you like then listen carefully to the instrumentals in the background. For example "I am a man who will fight for you honor." Let's say in the beginning for I am a ... have the character draw his sword/ weapon, and then on man, there is a drum beat during man you can have the guy pose with his sword in front of him. During the rest of this who will fight for your...you can have the person charging at some on or protecting the girl, then later at the end of the word honor there is a cymbal crash then have the sword clash on it.

So an idea of what you can do in wmm with simple syncing of words and beats. It can make the video much better than ignoring it or putting in useless effects.

Well hopefully this was of some help.

Technically it's possible to make a good AMV with WMM. Of course, technically it's also possible to recreate the Mona Lisa with crayons or make a house with nothing but toothpicks and elmers glue. Just because it's possible to do something with one of the worst tools possible doesn't mean it should be done that way though. Only idiots, people who feel like they're being artistic but really are just being idiots, or people who haven't decided this is something worth investing time/money into use bad tools.

but a good editor shouldnt blame their tools (as one of the "excuses" im sick of hearing for poor quality and poor editing is "well i made this with wmm"), they should move on to something better if they are really that invested into the hobby.
