Exactly.

The idea that "you should learn WMM first before premiere" is like saying;

You should learn how to hop around on one leg before you walk.

WMM is a step in the opposite direction of video editing compared to the gradual process of starting with premiere, maybe moving onto vegas, and then after effects/final cut pro.

WMM's editing system, interface, and general editing style are all extremely counter-intuitive, NOTHING like premiere's editing system, and if you try to go to premiere after "mastering" WMM, you'll be lost and confused.

Also take into account that WMM *locks* your export options, resolutions, and bitrate, unless you want to make a gargantuan gigabyte-sized video.

Then take into account that editing by the frame is impossible in WMM (which is why there are SO many WMM videos where a few frames from the next scene in a clip come through), which to me is a massive downfall; when i make my AMV's, i scroll along and line up audio within 1 frame of the sound occuring, something you can't do in WMM.

Add in that WMM lags like hell, is incompatible with a wide range of file types, and that it basically dumbs you down by putting everything on "automatic" for you, and yeah, it's fail.

Please, PLEASE don't use it if you're serious at all about making music videos. If you AREN'T serious though and just want to make screw around videos, by all means, use WMM then.

which is what you should be doing with any editing software (including wmm), then compressing it with meigui zarxgui or vdub mod instead of letting your editing software try to compress it...

Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides...

WMM is good for learning the very basics like: how to put clips and audio on the timeline, just about EVERY video software I've used (WMM, Ulead, 3 versions of Vegas, and I've even dabbled in premeire once or twice) are pretty much the same when it comes to the very simple stuff...

its also good to find out if you WANT to be in this hobby or if its not for you, because if you can handle the annoyances of WMM surely you can handle the less frequent annoyances of other/better programs... its also good if you have no money (and a windows platform), cause its a whole lot easer to use than trying to use any version of VirtualDub... O.o

theres the good and the bad of just about any program though... I'm personally not a fan of wmm by any means but it does have its good points at times

there are ways to get around this stuff too, such as cutting your clips precisely in virtuadub mod... so you dont get those ugly orphan frames

theres plenty of file types you shouldnt be editing with in the first place, and most of those file types would lag in ANY editing software :/

Can you say custom WMV export profiles?

And I'm guessing that the vast majority of AMVers who use WMM fit exactly that description, because the vast majority of AMVers period are just making videos for fun.

Really? You know some? I'm jealous, the only females into amvs I know of are just the ones in #amv. It'd be nice to meet a real lady sometime.

Do screaming fangirls count? 'Cause we get plenty of those every year at the AMV showings at AnimeNEXT.

Lies!

I've seen lots of WMM amv's which were quite good...
This one is well put together even though it's not available for dowload (so I guess it's a poor example on my part) but I know that it or one that matches it's description exactly is on Aut's favourite's playlist along with lot's of other videos that were or could have been made using WMM (just nothing in the description to idicate yea or nay) old school editing and WMM doesn't mean something sucks rabid monkey balls.

I'm pretty sure that even IF THIS video wasn't made in WMM, using a program you have to pay for wouldn't have made it any flashier

maybe i was just suckered in by all the emotional elements, but this is a good average video and should be watched with the band performing the song live right behind you, focusing on smart scene selections and i'm sure the cross-fade is the only transition used in the video

exception: using additional programs, some of the scenes where there is fuzziness at the bottom could have been cropped to edit that out and I SUPPOSE be more professional

just keep in mind, hobbies are all about what you put into them
If you're reading this, you've gone too far...PREPARE FOR RETRIBUTION!!
Don't judge an AMV by it's anime.. u nooB ;D

Quite honestly, things like Premiere are pretty easy to learn. I doubt the effort to learn it would be much more than the effort to learn WMM, sure there are a few more settings for your video and such, but that's just added power. It all boils down to what has been said before, the tools matter not, it's your editing/storytelling skills and love of the hobby that matter.

And if you wanna do effects videos, learn how to make awesome videos without effects first, then when you do make an effects video, it'll be just that much more awesome.

You sound like an extremely motivated individual who has a genuine interest in the hobby, so I wouldn't worry too much, you're on the right track. Just make stuff you want to make, and keep taking it further, and if you're really into your videos and passionate about the ideas you want to convey, the rest will be history.
