I'd prefer some substance in the theme or idea of the AMV than just lots of effects, and the seizure inducing effects are...very annoying. When I have to close my eyes or turn away when watching something, that's pretty bad...

And if it's what most people prefer now...let them, you can't change their mind. But as proof by this topic, there are people who don't, so at least they can enjoy an old school video if it is released. :)
I think the general problem with a lot of people here is that you all equate having lots of effects and beat matching with not following the storyline at all.
I try not to watch effect heavy videos too much though, so I'm only commenting on the ones I've seen. And those had so many effects I couldn't even see the story being presented if there was one.

I think the real problem is when people try and use effects to carry the video, not the editing or storyline. I think effects are fine to be with a video, I've seen many many that use them very well, but I think someone should let the editing and theme carry the video, not the effects because some people just go effects crazy, and when they start doing that I think they should think about their theme or editing rather than just try and cover it with the effects.
Care about the video itself, not what format it's in.

Haven't seen it,so I wouldn't know. I was just giving an example,as from Ophoria I created an image of what it would be,and that's not my type of video.
:D I like laughter ;DD

I like videos that have cool effects, or make a really amazing sync with the music. Plain videos are just boring to me.

But it doesn't really matter what I want, so when you make a video, make it however the hell you wanna make it, be it flashy or simple. That's all that matters.

I'm not skilled with creating effects or editing fast-paced videos, which is one of the reasons I might find the odd "seizure-tiffic" video entertaining. I'm closer to "old school" though, for many reasons.

Either way, I like stuff that I find entertaining... regardless of style.
a mix of both is nice...

OLD SCHOOL 4 LYFE!

On a more serious note, I generally prefer simpler videos that actually have a concept, use good scene selection, have a concept, use external melody (often called flow) and...have a concept!

I've noticed too many videos lately (and by lately I mean since 2003?) rely on effects, beat sync and other 'cool things' while having no actual substance in the video. No idea, no concept and certainly bad scene selection. The latter almost seems random even.

I for one prefer to let the video stand by itself and only use effects to ENHANCE the mood or concept rather than become the actual concept itself. Tends to make the video less shallow and more meaningful. Plenty of shows have nice scenes and moments that don't require effects to make it 'good.' Let it speak for itself sometimes instead of covering it all up.

Not to say it's wrong to just have mindless fun (I've done it too), but again, I see too many people use too much beat sync (i.e. EVERY BEAT IN THE DAMN SONG) or effects to mask out the lack of substance or concept.

It's sad.

But yeah OLD SCHOOL 4 LYFE!

People have preferences (as I have stated mine), but ultimately it comes down to this.

Rapture- Download them and you'll prolly understand

Granted edit for yourself and not others(well some people do it seems), I suppose i'm just dissapointed that there have been many new videos rated about a 2-3/5 as they use 'old school' editing and had they been made 5 years ago that wouldn't have been the case.
And No, I don't feel like trawling the announcement forum to find them, I'm pretty sure you all know what i mean and have seen them too.

I like old school editing.

I don't like flashy effects.

I digress.
