so in the future when I'm encoding my DVD rips what would you recommend I use? let's say I have a 500GB of free space and all I have to edit with is WMM on XP and Magix 2.0.

A lossless codec such as HuffYUV or Lagarith. Also recommend only taking the clips you need, but if you actually have 500GB available, then you might even be able to get away with saving entire episodes.
