One weird problem I've run into with the originality score is when the concept for an AMV is so unbelievably obvious (post viewing) that scoring high for originality seems like a joke, except for the fact that you certainly never would have thought of it and no one else has, either. Do you give the editor lots of points for exploiting a golden opportunity or do you just pat them on the head and say "nice job" because it's likely they've only managed to shove their way to the front of what's about to become a very long line? AMV Hell I'm looking at you. (Don't worry, I still luv ya!)
Also...I think eyecandy causes a little confusion, since a pretty basic (concept-wise) AMV with snazzy effects might cause more than a few people's eyes to glaze over when it comes time to score for originality. Me...unless the point OF the AMV is to showcase groundbreaking effects, I ask myself how original the AMV would be with its eyecandy stripped out and score originality accordingly.
As was said several times, originality is not a static thing. Next to "overall," it's probably the most subjective category on the opinion form because its so difficult to define (KFC just doesn't cut it, sorry) and, statistically, is in constant flux for a myriad of reasons.

haha true, but still... why stress over something like "originality" when you could be having fun making what you wanna make??...BasharOfTheAges wrote:I'll go out and say it... that's a cop out to actually addressing the subject at hand and is completely tangent to the purpose of the thread.JaddziaDax wrote:which goes back to my original statement: make what you want.
though the topic does make some interesting points at times...

here instead of (just) responding to other people I'll give my take on how I score on originality:
1. have I heard this song a half a million times? if so? have I seen it to this video source before? (Linkin Park and Cardcaptor Sakura? wut?)
2. have I seen this anime used a million times, and is it the same scenes I've seen over and over (hey another place promised vid that has the sunburst scene! wut do you kno?)
3. how much do I like this video? (yes this can play as a factor... as there aren't very many videos I would say I'm in love with and will play on loop - and if a video can get me to play on loop then there is a bit of originality in that, as most of the videos I watch either get archive to DVD or I delete them... and that is a whole other thread O: lol)
4. how does the quality of this video compare to other videos made with the same source? the masses of naruto and dbz and sailor moon and cardcaptor sakura videos often times have low visual and audio quality, if I see the opposite in this video perhaps there is something unique in that as it stands out from most of its "peers"
5. is there anything unique about this video as compared to the masses of other videos I've seen? (which is really the most of the score it I would say) is there an effect I think was done really well, that I haven't seen a million times? is there a feeling attached to this video that I haven't gotten from other videos? did this video do what it was supposed to do? did it make me react in a way i was "supposed to react"?
so to me theres probably a half a dozen (or more) facets that go into how I would give an originality score...
BUT as I said: just because its unoriginal that doesn't mean I don't like it. Though really it shouldn't matter weather or not I like something, because just because I don't like something that doesn't mean everyone won't like it.
and for the most part I'm like highly lenient on scores anyways O:

well see, it's an oxymoron to say originality is NOT new song to anime, where overused song to anime CANNOT be original.Szwagier wrote:It's just like Bashar said, the concept is the main factor.
It may seem like people are hammering videos just for the use of anime, but when series are being extremely overused the criteria are getting much higher than just putting something with a song that haven't been used yet. For example Sasuke vs Naruto + rock was done so many times, that it doesn't really matter if you choose a rock song that nobody knows or something that was used several times already - you won't get originality points here. It's like watching the same wall being repainted in different shades of one colour - it's still the same coloured wall.
Also the originality have nothing to do with how good the vid is (though its often the good videos that are being original)
Actually, It's my opinion that even a Linkin Park video done to DBZ CAN BE original. There was a time when LP was concidered niche and DBZ wasn't uber popular. Would it be unoriginal than?? For me, facts are facts and facts cannot change.
Unoriginality is a funny thing, but about the only way I can think of that you can measure it is whether you enjoy it or not. Just my opinion.

Im afraid i'll have to give this an originality score of 5
You repeated this soooo many times in threads like this
Mix it up a bit next time
I must give this an originality score of 10!Pas1990 wrote: Seriously though, no one here will ever have total originality, because we are, after all, using anime that's already been made, and music that's already been played.
Ya hear that peoples?!
You will never be truly original unless you learn to draw and sing your own shit!
tsk...tsk...
shame on just about everyone on this site...
using other peoples work and try to say that its original >.>
I'll tell ya who the true original ones are:
Gainax
Aic
CLAMP
MOE
GONZO DIGIMATION to name a few
now those are the original ones...
Maybe i should start making my own stuff..
Would anyone like to hear me sing "numb" and have scenes of stick figures fighting in a video?
That was deep...post-it wrote:.. what is originality
. . can it be defined in words ? -- yup!
.. . what is it:
1) you see a man being hit by a girl on her bike. .. originality, no!
2) you are the man being hit by the girl on the bike. .. originality, no!
3) you are the girl on the bike hitting the man. .. originality, no!
4) you are the one who lost his bag of marbles causing the accident. .. originality, no!
5) you saw the bag of marbles break open, and didn't have enough time to warn anybody. .. originality, yup!
.. originality is being at a place during a time when nothing was supposed to happen and watching everything unfold right before your eyes ( good or bad! ) .. in writing, its called the fourth person perspective. Originality is seeing something that everyone else missed. .. does it happen very often in life? hell no! -- that's what makes it unique! .. a true original .. can be told by no one else.

Reviewability = 8
As for this topic, i'll have to give it an originality score of 2
Theres been alot of these types of threads in the past and they pretty much have said the same things
sorry ^^;
Mix it up a bit next time and I may be able to give it a 5 ^_^
hmm...
you guys have said some really interesting and deep things on this subject...
but now that I think about it
No AMV on this site is original!
The only true original one was the one made by the first person that started this hobby
We are all just a bunch of copycats! >_<

There are editors here who made amvs without having heard of them before.

.. I still think the best way to Judge things are by "your own attention span" ...
.. ever run into the Sales Manager from Hell? "This can do .." "This is why .." "Act Now .."
.... . you know you've met this clown before! How Much Interest did you have in the Sales Pitch -vs- the Actual Product Itself?

2) Flashy - Strobe - Lighted cuts work fine in Disco Dance Videos.
3) One Scene over another over another gets . soo . boorriinngggg . zzzZZZzzzz

it's kinda' funny but, one of my favorite amv categorys are shoujo amvs of series' I do NOT watch, like Princess TuTu, Ouron, Yufie etc. Heck, this got me into Fruit Baskets. I like these amvs precisely because I DO NOT watch these series', I never quite know what to expect.JaddziaDax wrote:When it comes down to a series that bores the hell out of you yet people keep pushing it on you anyways (well at least they don't anymore) you don't enjoy the series anymore, and frankly I've yet to see a DBZ video that compares to Euphoria
but I will say this: I have seen a couple of DBZ videos that I do like... so I won't loop all DBZ videos into the linkinballz genre (I get really bored really quickly of the "DBZ/Naruto Fight Sequences + Rock Song = AMV" formula, hell, I'd get bored of it even if it were a series I liked such as Full Metal Panic but pure "action" amvs that have no connection to the song I find rather boring no matter how action synced they are).
but when it comes down to it: I will only get/download/watch DBZ videos that are recommended to me by my friends or are made by an editor I recognize and know as a good editor. I have a bias. Thats life.
My liking a series shouldn't matter when it comes to giving scores on an opinion: I wouldn't give a lower Visual Quality score just because I think DBZ is ugly. I wouldn't give lower scores in anything except for maybe Review (because this is where my personal bias I "allowed" to come into play), because if I don't like a series I'm more than likely not going to watch this video often.
but I wasn't talking about scores on originality, I was talking about liking/disliking a video.
I like a lot of highly unoriginal videos, because I like them. They are enjoyable to me even if the idea has been done 1000000000 million times O: I make a lot of highly unoriginal videos because I like the concepts and maybe I hadn't done it before myself and I wanted to try it out.
which goes back to my original statement: make what you want.
The catch to all this, the amv MUST BE original or it'll really be a typical amv and I'll enjoy it just as much as I'd enjoy the series. IE none. Therefore, the catch to all this, is the video MUST BE ENJOYABLE. IF video is original, said video should be enjoyable. IF video is NOT enjoyable said audience will be asleep.

... I got quoted
*filled with warm fuzzies*
Now, that aside, I shall show you noobs how to make an original AMV
*runs off with naruto DVDs and linkin park album in hand*
Look, to me, originality can be done with the above, as stupid as that may sound. If someone can present a naruto AMV combined with linkin park and I'm not thinking "dear god, not another one of these" then I think they've done a bloody fantastic job of it.
I say use whatever the hell you want, we are all theives anyway for taking from anime. What counts most is how you decide to show it, and as far as originality goes, that doesn't mean syncing naruto punching sasuke to a few drumbeats.
But, if you can make a naruto-punching-sasuke-synced-to-drumbeats type AMV and I haven't decided to destroy my monitor, then I'd say that's original. I don't really care how many times I've seen that, as long as you can show it to me in a way where I don't automatically think "seen it" then you've done a job well done.
