funny, i've only met one person who watches anime that doesn't mind it being called cartoon and here it sems like most people on the org consider it a no argument thing. you guys are right that clara is kind of meandering and not making sense but her overall point is corect in my opinion, i'm not so hardcore as to make a big deal out of it cause there's no real reason to argue on and on about this cause were all too stubborn to come to any comon ground so screw it i alredy expressed my opinion in a very good way it seems cause no one has been able to dispute anything i said in my last post but thats beside the point. anyway clara-you did good but you just keep looking worse so quit while your ahead, tsuji-lighten up, let people think how they want to, at least she watches anime and has an active interest in it, where i live the only anime people i see regularly are toonami junkys and sailor moon freaks people who only watch non-violent and non-sexual anime and thats why i hate them being called cartoons cause watching those people is painfull so i disagree with the generic term of cartoon for all animation, anyway just some advice so everybody lighten up, try not to be so bull headed, and for crying out loud drop this stupid thread.

clara you do know that the only workable definition of anime is "Animation Produced in Japan" because of the vast variety of styles and genres that exist in japanese anime both now and in the past 60 years.
This is where the whole crux of your argument falls. You seem to think that anime refers to a specific style - it doesn't - it's just animation from japan. That's it. There are lots of ANIME that for all intents and purposes are identical to the output of western animation studios but they are by definition STILL ANIME.
It's as simple as that.

If we're speaking Japanese, yes. But, we're speaking English and so "Anime" means more than just "Animation from Japan". Because, under that definition, even if there was a piece of animation from Japan that is identical to a Cartoon in America, it would still be called an Anime, and not a Cartoon.
But obviously, that doesn't make too much sence. Which is why I was saying that Anime and Cartoons are two different styles of Animation.

Okay... if I can't solve this then Temjin will, or The Agents.
From the D_V dictionary:
Anime (n): Romanji form of the Japanese word meaning "Animation"
Animation (n): A series of still images composed to form the illusion of movement. This also applies to stop motion model animation and stop motion actor animation. May also contain sound.
Manga (n): The romanji form of the Japanese word meaning "Humourus picture / Disrespectful picture" aka "Cartoon", nb (Has been broadened to contain serious cirumstances also)
Cartoon (n): A comical depiction of a person, people or situation. Expressed as either "Comic" or "Animation"
OK so from all of this...
Anime = Animation
Cartoon = Animation or Comic
Therefore if Cartoon = Animation, and Anime = Animation well you don't have to be a genius to do the math.

It may not make sense to you, but it is a fact.
The idea that anime is some entity that is by its nature completely different to western animation exists only in your head. It's just not true. Feel free to interpret the term "anime" in your own way but it is, in the technical sense, incorrect.
This is why I said I apreciate that some people interpret the word anime differently. If you can accept that some people think of anime as JUST animation from japan wheras you think it is a particular TYPE of animation from japan then this argument does not need to exist.
