ANIME... not cartoon...

I don't really mind people calling Anime a cartoon, the whole "Baby Be-Bop" thing gets on my nerves but in just idle conversation if I mention an anime and someone says,
"Oh! I've seen that Cartoon!" I don't get into a mood over it.
(Strange, all this time and I'm just now answering what the Non-Professional asked in his first post.)
After all, when people say that it's not usually in an insulting way. They just think "Moving Drawings" and jump to cartoon. It's more to do with the way they were raised and the things they've experienced, you can't expect a person to change the way they think just because you find it annoying.

Absolutedestiny, I just meant that if you really wanna go by the idea that "Anime" is just "Animation from Japan", then that is what it'll be, an ANIME, NOT A CARTOON. And that's fine.

The part where you replace fact with fiction, don't get me wrong but anime is a form of cartoon.Clara Yuri Asaki wrote:That wouldn't anything to do with this.
I think I've realized more than what could've been ignored. Just what are you talking about anyways?
You should not complain this fact, but rather about the fact that people think of kiddie stuff when one mentions the word cartoon.

I think he's referring to the last remaining point that if you allow anime to mean "Animation from Japan" and cartoons to be a description for a type of animation then it is possible to have an anime that is a cartoon.
I know that the feeling behind this is that the word cartoon doesn't correctly describe what anime is, and I agree with you. However, I do see that in a technical sense it is correct to describe certain japanese animation as cartoons but it doesn't correctly describe other japanese animation.
This is why the term anime is preferable but also why the term cartoon is not always incorrect. I think we can leave it at that as we all know now what we each mean,

True, here in the netherlands the word for cartoon or anime is 'tekenfilm', which is roughly translated as Animated Movie. I feel this describes anime much better than cartoon, but it doesn't work that way, the word 'cartoon' has become synonimous (sp?) with Animated Movie, hence people using it to describe Anime.AbsoluteDestiny wrote:I think he's referring to the last remaining point that if you allow anime to mean "Animation from Japan" and cartoons to be a description for a type of animation then it is possible to have an anime that is a cartoon.

And I know I can be hard to follow in a conversation, I often find it hard to find the words in English, so please bear/bare (sp?) with me.

MrScribble, with what you said before, it should be: Cartoon is a form of Animation, and Anime is a form of Animation. I guess you could say that Cartoon is a form of Anime only because Anime means Animation is Japanese, but we're speaking English. What I'm trying to say is that Anime would not be a form of Cartoon.

Absolutedestiny, I suppose that a Anime can be a Cartoon, but it should still be called Anime. I think that makes sence with what we know.

As I say, the term Anime is the best but that doesn't mean the term cartoon is always wrong - it's just mainly wrong and gives the an incorrect impression of the medium based on preconceptions of western 'cartoon' animation.Clara Yuri Asaki wrote:Absolutedestiny, I suppose that a Anime can be a Cartoon, but it should still be called Anime.
