Audio editing program?

I'm want to know if there's any audio editing programs that can separate audio layers? Like take a the drums out of a song for example. Or even if any of the video editors we mostly use have a feature similar to that (adobe, vegas, magix, ect.) .
This would come in really handy for things like MEPs and the like where you have to merge audio tracks.
And if there's a freeware version, that would be even better

Audio doesn't quite work that way. When a song is mixed down they take all the tracks and combine them to create a single waveform (oversimplification to the extreme). This wave has all the digital information for all the instruments, vocals etc. You can use vocal removers but they kind of suck, you can turn the low end down or up or the high end but you can separate the tracks into the various instruments. You can however use audacity as stated above to mix in drumbeats using hammerhead or some such, or mix two songs together.

I use Soundbooth and Audition. However I don't think it'll be of any use to you because of what Outofsync already mentioned.

Yeah, warheat and outofsynch were right. It's not what i'm looking for and theres a good chance i'll never find a program like that because of what was said, they are merged into one audio stream. But if i find something along those lines, or a method of seperating the streams, i'll be sure to let u know, cuz that would be hella cool

But thanks anyways for that oto, i've been looking for a program to record music with and audacity works 100x better then vegas does with audio :3

I seem to remember someone a long time ago saying that if the audio source is in Dolby 5.1 surround, you could conceivably seperate different parts of an audio stream.

That's more applicable to movies and such than CDs and music, though.
